Good day all have a 2004 Cummins ism that for the fifth set of injectors in a row has developed a miss yet again. Truck will run fine for 3 weeks max then it drops two injectors. For the life of me I can’t figure this issue out for the life of me.

Same injectors each time? I do not remember but is it like an ISL with two injectors per harness under valve cover? Swap harnesses around and see what happens.

I’ve been down this path already with a 2001 M11.

The original injectors last for many years and are reliable.

Once they’re changed out, the rebuilt injectors kept failing.

Had some that lasted 1,000 miles, others 3,500 miles.

We bought used original take outs from a low mileage engine and put them in.

Those lasted longer than the rebuilds. 31,000 miles before some failed.

We junked the truck after. Over $12,000 in injectors and labour put in. Terrible.

It is a great engine, I really liked it but the constant injectors failing is terrible.

Three different shops worked on that truck.

I told my boss he should’ve went with new injectors right from the start.

He said that’s $9,000 for a set of six new ones with out the labour.

When the N14 first came out it had quite a few injector problems that meant
replacing injectors under warranty. There was a high incidence of the new injectors failing after a short period of time. We blamed the failures on Cummin's poor Recon parts quality.
The M11 uses the same series of injector as the N14.

On the next Cummins training course I went on they taught us that the failures were
a result of fine metal particles that came from the valve and injector springs wearing
against the head and valve spring caps and injectors. These particle mostly wash
down into the oil pan and end up in the oil filter but some particles go down the
injector bore in the head and sit on top of the top O-ring on the injector. When the
injector is removed the particles go down the injector bore and can end up in the fuel
    passage causing injectors to fail.

We were told to clean the oil from the area around the injector before removing it so it would not run down the injector bore and to clean the injector bore with a lint free rag
    immediately after removing the injector.
After following their procedure the failure rate went down considerably.

Cleanliness is very important when working on a fuel system. It only take one speck of dirt to make an injector fail. A mechanic wearing dirty coveralls or handling rebuilt injectors
with dirty hands is a problem.

There is a lot of truth with the recon celect plus injectors being junk.

However, before we keep throwing parts let's verify other things first:

The harness under the valve cover absolutely loves to become oil soaked, start getting excessive resistance in it, wires become heated and brittle, and generally turns into junk. Good indicators of this is oil leakage at the pass thru in the back(or front, depends on application), or the 2 pins pouring oil out when unplugged from inj. Previous poster was correct about same inj as n14, however the harness is very different from n14. I have had a lot of m11 inj harness issues with oil intrusion. Another good indicator is intermittent jake issues (same harness, same oil intrusion issue) isolate the harness and ring out for resistance, very straight forward.

Also have had a rash of goofy select plus ecms with inj driver issues.

One more thing to check is cam wear. If its repeatedly in same holes, need to take the push tube out and shine a light down on the cam and inspect for metal/damage. Its a pain in the butt to see down there, its bit me before tho!

Lastly are you adjusting right? A b c 15 3 6 2 4 just like the valves. There are 2 stops when adjusting! Easy to miss the first one if using a wrench. You'll know the second one because it'll be #### tight! 2 flats backwards past the 1st stop.
