I have a 2010 International with an ISM cummins. The truck is intermediately throwing a spn 641 fmi 7 code. This code leads to the vgt turbo actuator. Mechanic I took it to says to just replace the entire turbo at 3k plus labor. Says he hasn't had any luck replacing the actuator by itself and a new turbo comes with the actuator installed already. Guess you have to program the actuator with the computer software. He did basically say he's covering his ### as he has had problems changing the actuator before and the turbo go out shortly after. The truck has under 300k on it and around 8000 hours. Seems like a short like for a turbo. I can understand the sensor/actuator going bad. Was just looking for some advice as the turbo is 3k and the actuator is under 1k. Any thoughts?

My understanding is that carbon builds up on the vanes. This will not allow the vanes to move smoothly. Changing the actuator doesn't solve the real problem.
I am in the same boat but I have 700k on D13. In the long run changing the complete unit will be cheaper since there is no easy fix to clean up the carbon. -
Occasionally just the actuator can be changed but its best to change the turbo with the actuator since the majority of the time the reason the actuator goes bad is from resistance or hard spots in the mechanical system inside the turbo itself.

Anyone have any luck with a non OEM rebuild? Haven't even looked into them yet but these turbo's aren't cheap.

I have a 6.7 Cummins 340 HP. When I start the engine the stop engine and check engine light come on. The code is SPN 641 engine variable geometry turbocharger actuator number1. I then stop and restart the engine and there are no warning lights, also no active DTC. What should I do

it's so funny when some people tells you if u have bad actuator is the best to change the whole turbo ?
why ? why replacing good working parts for some remanufactured ? why do u think that the new turbo will last 500k ? it can brake down in 100k. I have issues with my cummins isx 15 it throw code sa 0 spn 641 fmi 7. Earlier this morning my truck started shaking the whole engine around 30-40mph. when i tried to accelerate the whole truck was shaking loaded with 45k. no code poped up in that time. I fueled at fuelmart so i thought is bad fuel went to the mechanic and literally just 5 miles from mechanic the truck started acting normal ? im like wtf ? so i went to buy fuel filter i thought is clogged even tho i replaced it 5kmiles ago. After replacing this code came ? any solution ? i have no money for new turbo 9k as they qoueted me in Cummins i was just wondering how much it is ? the code is showing actuator ? anyone in simmilar situation ?
Thanks any help is welcome!
