The method I described is referred to as the inner base circle method and should be used on engines with top stop injectors along with the .011 intake and .023 exhaust valve settings. 6 inch pounds or zero lash on the injector setting.

Good to hear that you got a handle on it. I knew you could do it!

I do not have that exact CPL on my list but it is in the group that Has a 90 inch pounds, with the valves at .014 and .027.

The PT type D injector requires that you adjust the travel with a dial indicator after the injector is installed using the rocker adjustment.
The Topstop injector travel is preset when the injector is assembled/calibrated, so it is more of a self contained unit within itself. It uses a 2 piece plunger that has a swedged rubberized joint for a little built in cushion. The plunger does bottom on injection hence the need for the rubberized joint for some built in give. This is where the injector often fails and can cause a ticking sound and an engine miss when they do fail.

When following the OBC method of adjustment on PTD injectors, the injector plunger will be bottomed in the injector at time of adjustment and torqued to an inch pound spec.

Snap on has a special T-handle torque wrench for setting Cummins injectors. Secondly TS Injectors set the same way you used to set the PT injectors with a dial indicator. If you are not using a torque wrench for the injector adjustment a field expedient method that I used all the time (Six years working for Cummins) after doing my first set of TS injectors was to. Turn injector adjusting screw down half turn after rocker contacted the injector to seat the push tube and squeeze all the oil out, back off to loose and turn back until it contacted the injector plunger and add about "schose" turn, just past zero lash setting. Tighten jam nut and check side to side movement of the injector rocker by seperating the INJ and valve rockers to get side to side movement and if you have a slight drag ,(similar to magnetic drag) on the inj. rocker you are close to 6 in lbs. If you check the rocker side to side before locking the jam nut, you may tighten the inj adjuster too tight. It is like checking magnetic drag on feeler gauges when setting the valves.

I tried the T-handle tool when it was introduced, but often when it broke over at torque limit it would flip the adjustment screw back out. I found that it just cost me time and frustration to use it. I resorted to the screwdriver and zero lash, spin the push tube and feel the rocker load.
Although the outer base circle (OBC) method of adjustment accounts for valve train wear, where the inner base circle (IBC) method doesn't, it is still the preferred method of adjustment for top stop injectors.
