Hello,
I half a dozen trucks that have a caterpillar engine. I asked my mechanic this question and he did not know the answer. I asked how the ISX 450 hp Cummins engine with Eaton automatic transmission compares to the Caterpillar engine. He did not know the answer. I would just like to know if the ISX 450 hp Cummins is efficient, and has good mpg. I am looking into buying a truck with a Cummins engine, and it will be my first one with that kind of engine (ISX 450 hp Cummins). Is that a good and reliable engine? I already know everything about the Caterpillar engine....but I know nothing about the Cummins (that specific one). Any links or statistics/experienced answers that could lead me in the right direction are much appreciated. Thanks!
Cummins engine ISX 450 hp? Please help.

Take a chance. Trucking is like gambling. Cat motors cost more. My opinion.

My truck is a 2011 Volvo VNL780 with a 2010 emissions ISX 450 ST (Smart Torque), 10 spd overdrive and 3.36 rear end. My truck is governed at 65 mph. My overall trip average right now is 7.8 mpg. Helped by a 313 mile deadhead to Calexico, CA from Las Vegas. Even with the 41k I pulled up from El Paso to LV, I was averaging about 7.0 when o got to Vegas thanks to idling the night before and the hills on US93. It pulls like a mofo too. Good engine IMO.
410TruckGrinder Thanks this. -
I have a per-emission 450 ISX. I am pleased with performance and fuel mileage. It is easy to work on.

My 475 ISX will get 6.5 mpg all day running 75 mph....
Other than the EGR problems it is still a solid engine.
Just expect the EGR cooler to fail around 300k......normal on these newer emission engines. -

it depends on if the cummins is one of the EGR motors. the EGR is a huge headache on the cummins engines. other than that, the ISX is for the most part, bulletproof. very strong engines. they are even better when they are not castrated.
as long as your drivers can stay out of the boost, the ISX will get very good fuel mileage. if they drive hard, set the limit on the trucks to about 68. most cummins run the best around 65 to 70, but remember, the faster the trucks, the more potential damage it will do to your CSA score.
i drive a 99 volvo that has the cummins n14 600hp unrestricted and it is a monster. it stays around the 5.5 to 6 mpg mark as long as i stay out of the turbo.
