Well, I can probably give an idea on some things from my personal experience of buying parts.

In frame kit from Interstate McBee roughly $1700. Not out of frame.

Reconditioned heads $1000 @ Motor parts in Ironton, OH

Injectors: $800 at Premco in TX.
$1200 at Antrim diesel in PA. (Not stock)

Turbo: $1200 at Power products in KY. Holset HT60.

Turn the crank .010 / .010: $1000 at Givens in WV.

Compressor: $600 at Central City in WV.

Vibration dampener: $700 at Cummins in WV.

Acc drive gear: $700 at Cummins in WV.

I can probably think of more after I get up tomorrow, long day and my butt is dragging….

Nope lol, everything I have is different. Lowboy has Daytons, flatbed is hub pilot, and tractor is stud pilot…

Rebuilt mine 4 years ago. IIRC it ended up being right around $20k. That's with me doing most of the work. Paid a shop to pull it out of the truck and put it back in. Machine shop line bored it and replaced two of the counterbores

    Thanks for the replies.

They told me for the shop to pull it out and put it back in and do an out of frame rebuild was $30,000.

    I thought that sounded High.

I don't think I'm going to purchase the truck anyway.

    Rideandrepair and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.

There’s a Cummins guru close by that will build an engine in his garage for about $1800 if you supply parts and bring the engine to him. Not bad considering. He’s the man that gave me the big pump, I myself have learned a lot from him…

I doubt you could source all Cummins parts, so mostly aftermarket. I can't see how to hit 30k on that, but actually seeing the work might tell a different story. Could be new clutch and input shaft, flywheel, starter, water pump, ad nauseum.

    Either way, paperwork would verify.

Machine shop work can really add to the cost.

I had just remembered of a freind buying a N14 from Cummins in Charleston with Cummins doing all the work, think he said it was close to $28,000. And they still ended up with a lot of problems, mainly the head and liner issues…

To my understanding, Cummins is soon to quit supporting these dinosaurs. N14 and newer will be their focus.

I’ve used aftermarket parts, but I still use Cummins head gaskets since they interchange with the N14….

    Looking back at my spreadsheet...
    Total cost was $23,046.39
Shop charges for taking it out, putting it back in, and doing a few other things were $8,605.40. The truck and trailer also sat at their shop for 6 months
Machine shop line bore, replace two counterbore rings, deck block was $3,142.13
I had to replace the crankshaft too. Found a used one in good shape for $1,107.70

Finding parts was the worst of it during covid. The pistons for cpl 1280/1256 aren't made anymore so I went with a slightly higher comp ratio
