Don't know if that'll help you or not. -
Electronic or mechanical engine?
-
Does your speedometer work correctly?
-
Thanks for the replys...
My truck is an electronic N-14 and the speedo is acting funny, tends to bounce around when I am on the highway. It will show, say 65 then drop to about 45 and then move up to about 60ish. It really varies and sometime it doesn't do much at all. -
well that sounds like a bad road speed sensor, and if it can't tell consistently how fast it's going, then it can't maintain a speed. Does your truck have a way to send or view fault codes? That might narrow it down. As a previous post mentioned the switch on the clutch, there are also switches for the brake pedal, and trailer arm if you have one, and if they are not working properly, will not let a cruise engage.

Had a problem with my cruise control. Speedometer and tripmeter wouldn't work either. Turned out to be a magnetic speed sensor in the tranny. Funny thing though, when all that would stop working, the truck wasn't limited to 65 anymore.

Once you loose your speed the ECM basically has nothing to go on and will just run to its max rpm limit. Most trucks are programmed to limit the rpm to something very low if the ECM is missing the vehicle speed sensor to prevent over speed, or driver tampering. On a 93, I am going to guess the speed sensor has two leads on it. One for the engine and the other for just the speedo. You can try switching them and see if that helps. While you are down there you need to check if the output yoke is loose or if the output bearing have excessive play. This will cause the tone gear the sensor reads from to bounce around. Other than that, the ECM needs to see that the cruise switch is on/ set and resume buttons work properly/ clutch switch is in released position, and a stable road speed. The only way to monitor this is with computer and Cummins Insite program.

My 97 fld120 is doing the same thing, mine has a 3406E, however the digital dash display for the cat shows the accurate speed.
Same thing sensor on the tranny? -
not wanting to create another thread about the same subject i have already asked about, i figure i would revisit this old thread of mine cause the cruise control still is not working.
to answer heavyd:
the speed sensor on the trans has been replaced yet the speedo is still not working correctly. example: when i am travel the speed limit (55 mph) the speedo typically shows 35 mph. the speed sensor has two plugs with each plug having 2 wires.
i have been chasing electrical issues and believe i have most of the major issues corrected. the latest issue is a red stop engine light turning on then off sporadically, so i got an ecm printout for the fault codes. (getting help on that with this thread: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...elers/164462-n14-got-ecm-codes-123-132-a.html). while looking over the printout, the cummins tech noticed the ecm showed the service brake switch was depressed. the cummins tech told me the switch is probably bad and that is part of why the cruise isnt working. however; the brake lights, turn signals, running ligts and 4-way flashers all work correctly. is there more than one brake switch?
i purchased a new brake switch and cruise control switch from freightliner. i get to the distribution block under the dash (behind the steering column) expecting to see old switches similar to the new ones, wrong! i go back to freightliner for a diagram and because of the age of the truck they no longer have it and that i need to take the truck to service. well, if i could afford to do that i would not be asking all of the fine peeps on this board for help!
looking at the above picture, i believe these are the two switches i need to replace. (one on #10 and the other on #13) notice the black body of the switches are the same height.
now, these are the new switches freightliner gave me. the one on the left is the brake switch and the one on the right is the cruise control switch. the black body of the cruise control switch is short. all of the other ones are taller. this creates my dilemma, does the cruise control switch go on #10 or #13 on the distribution block or and i looking entirely in the wrong location?
anyone happen to have a schematic or diagram for this?
