Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, please let me know. I have a Cummins ISX 475 with 1.6M miles on it. I change the oil every 12k and keep up on the engine/sensors when it needs repairs. The engine is needing an Inframe (not sure when the last one was done, I bought it used) due to blow by and oil consumption. So here’s my question, the shop is advising with 1.6M miles that I should put a long block in because of the number of miles on the crankshaft. True or not, what is the consensus on life expectancy for the crankshaft? Last time we did the rods and mains they looked like new.

I’m sure you can have a machine shop magma flux to check for stress cracks and mic’ed out I guess not sure. Never heard that one before. Why on earth would Crank be damaged?

Depends on its shape and what your trying to do. If your trying to build another million mile motor it might be worth it. Plus you get the ECM, turbo, wiring harness and etc. if you do get a long block, it might be worth pulling the head off at the cost of a gasket and some labor to check the liner height. Heard some true stories of liner heights on new long blocks being mismatched and etc

    I agree.
Unless your bearings seized or connecting rod broke. How would the crank be damaged.

I think the shop is trying to upsell you something you don't need.

I was in a Cummins shop. I had the overhead done because I had a loping idle. I couldn't get fixed. They said I had a crack in the fuel filter housing. They changed that.
    Still had the problem.
I asked the tech at Cummins if there could be any O-rings in the fuel system other than where the filter spins on.
    He said no.
Than the Shop Forman (salesman) came over and starting to spew why I should just put a crate motor in my truck, instead of Overhaul. He implied my problem is most likely head related.

When I got home, I got my hands dirty. I didn't know the fuel lines had O-rings where they attached to the fuel filter head. I found this out as I was installing the Fass system.

My point couple O-rings could have saved me $350.00. Not to mention the crate motor he wanted to sell me. Some shops like to maximizing the profit. Not having the main focus of helping "you" the truck owner.

    Good luck.

Now that makes sense. I’m sure you have seen Rawze on Utube. He may know a bit about all that and the economics of it all

1.6m miles, it would be wise to pull the crank and have it checked.

That’s a great story!! Perfect example of how some so called reputable shops try to rip you off . I love it . Be tempted to go back and politely educate them on this. With a” Thanks for your help anyway.”

I wouldnt do that on a longblock, it'd probably void your warranty.

The guy was the main engine guy for 18 years at the Idaho Falls Peterbilt, now he has his own shop. I told him when I dropped the truck off how many miles where on the truck, there was no mention of a new crankshaft at that time. They began to tear into it this morning and one of cam gears had some broken teeth on it and now the recommendation for the long block doubling my cost. Just doesn’t make sense to me why it wasn’t mentioned earlier.
