Hello, I have one crack that goes across the right side view mirror on my 2001 freightliner century. The mirror can be used and has a clear view and is clean. is this a d.o.t violation?
The mirror is heated but even if I get a replacement mirror without it being heated can I just get the mirror alone, or do I need the whole assembly on these? was hoping to just pop out the view mirror if I can.. thanks

you can typically replace just the glass iv had to replace a couple on my truck.
as far as dot im unsure. im not sure if i have ever been inspected with a cracked mirror or not. iv broken a few of them running gravel roads with only 1/4 fenders on my truck. im never lucky enough to get a crack somewhere that it doesn't screw with me so i normally replace them pretty quick. -
With all the crap I've seen on mirrors, tape, cardboard and even a tshirt to hold it together, I wouldn't really worry about it and get it replaced as soon as you can.
Lepton1 and spyder7723 Thank this. -
Just replace it. It's cheap compared to what is fixing to happen when part of that #### thing falls clear or something....
In my time we had little 25 dollar mirriors and a big wrench. Unbolt old one toss it, bolt on new one go. The Century Mirriors of that year is quite a bit more involved than that. I think they overengineer the #### things myself. -
most of the aero mirrors you adjust them in all the way and look behind the glass and there will be a way to release the glass. my best suggestion is to go to freight-liner and buy new glass for the mirror and then look at the attaching mechanism on the back side and you should be able to figure it out.

Not sure how easy your mirrors are to change out.
I had the Moto mirror brand on my truck. I bought a cheap regular mirror and just put the glass/ mirror piece over the face of the cracked mirror. I used rtv along the four edges to hold it in place.
Unless you looked at from close it was hard to tell.
$13 dollar repair in 30 minutes time.
This was a few years back. Side mirror might cost twice that now.
The heater worked on the repaired mirror. -
there it is.. its just a small crack.. the problem is the bolts are all corroded and rusty.. seized like you have never seen them before lol.. anyway is this ok.. I saw the d.o.t regulations section 111.. it states that as long as its visible and free of sharp edges then its ok.. plus theres only 1 crack and its not webbing with another. I know i can change it but this is my first truck and im trying to get it on the road. if god permits me to. thanks
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
@biiqtruckin ...Ddddddaaaaaamnnnnn

ok.. i guess its not a big deal then nax.. thanks for your opinion man. I just want to be clear of the d.o.t major violations.. i know some are picky but it should be ok i hope

I get that, but dude think about it. This defective mirror housing will be seen *EVERYTIME* you pass the scale house.
You know what that means? It means, that u stand a 99% chance of getting inspected.
It's like this guy. He gets pulled over every time...I wonder why (and ya, it's not that he's black lol)
I like his truck tho.Attached Files:
