I'm going to look at a truck for sale that has a cracked bell housing.

What would cause this kind of a problem and what are the other problems that are associated with having a cracked bell housing?

Is the truck safe to drive empty?

A cracked bell housing is caused by worn transmission and/or engine mounts causing excessive vibration or movement which eventually will cause the bell housing to crack.

It would be safe to drive it home or to a repair shop, but I would have it replaced ASAP.

Like he said or drive line issues. On heavy trucks I refer to the housing on the front of the transmission as the bell housing. The housing between it and the engine I refer to as the flywheel housing.
Which one is it and how bad is it cracked?

I don't know how badly it is cracked I have not seen the truck yet. The seller says it's the transmission bellhousing.

I do have another whole transmission I could put in if the trans is bad and I have another flywheel housing for that particular engine if it needs one. I also have bellhousings that would fit that particular transmission.

I think mainly I'm asking what other type of problems could have caused that and what other problems could come from that if they ran it for a while. That way I know what I'm up against if I were to purchase the truck.

If it's decent I would just baby it home and get into it.

Which motor does it have? Cummins has an oil passage that goes through that housing if it is an ISX.

Check the bolts in the bell housing to make sure they are tight. We see this a lot a driver come in for a clutch adjustment only to find the bell housing bolts are loose and have seen cracked ones before too. It probably how they found this one.
