Could I take medical leave or will I have to quit?

    Here's my situation. I'm planning on getting LASIK done no matter what the cost. I can't get it done at the moment because I'm not allowed more than 4 days of hometime at a time. For a good LASIK ill need at least 2-3wk off for pre-exam, surgery, and recovery. Will medical leave cover time off for LASIK? Or will I have to quit and try to get rehired after? Oorr is there another option I'm not aware of?

    If you want to go back to the same company just ask for a leave of absence if the medical won't cover it. You won't get paid but the job will be waiting for you.

    When you know you are suppose to give employers 30 days advanced notice. The first time you don't have to mention FMLA but they have 5 days to notify you that you qualify for FMLA. One of the qualifying conditions...copy/paste...

    "a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the essential functions of his or her job".

    Wow, I just learned something. They can't change your health benefits while you are on FMLA.

    My crooked company changed my health insurance deductible from $1500 to $5000 prior to my surgery. I'm gonna see if I can't get that $3500 back. I had to pay out over $8700. I can use that money.

    you are covered under the Family Leave Act as long as you meet certain conditions, which includes your own medical leave......right off the Department of Labor website:

    Overview

    The FMLA entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave. Eligible employees are entitled to:

    Twelve workweeks of leave in a 12-month period for:
    the birth of a child and to care for the newborn child within one year of birth;
    the placement with the employee of a child for adoption or foster care and to care for the newly placed child within one year of placement;
    to care for the employee's spouse, child, or parent who has a serious health condition;
    a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the essential functions of his or her job;
    any qualifying exigency arising out of the fact that the employee's spouse, son, daughter, or parent is a covered military member on "covered active duty;" or

    Twenty-six workweeks of leave during a single 12-month period to care for a covered servicemember with a serious injury or illness if the eligible employee is the servicemember's spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin (military caregiver leave).

    Not sure if lasik is better now than 5 years ago, but my sister had noticably worse night vision after surgery. Her daytime vision was (& is) fantastic, but the nighttime contrasts give her enough trouble that she wont drive after dark unless she has to. She was only 30 at the time. I had been considering lasik, but her experience scared me away.

    My husband and I both had Lasik done. He doesn't have any problem with night vision, but I do. That could have to do with the fact that he was corrected for far vision only and I have monovision, one eye for distance and one for close work. Also I have problems with dry eyes. All in all, I'd still do it again. I love not having to wear glasses or contacts. Also when hubby had his done he went in for pre-exam on Saturday, then back a couple of weeks later for the surgery. Only had to take off 1 days work as his dr had Saturday for 24 hour followups.

    I had it done 12 yrs ago.. Best money spent ever.

    If you're anywhere under the age of 48, I'd say get it done. You will not regret it.

    My neice had it done in both eyes and wore protective glasses for 24 hours. After 24 hours, she was OK for work with no glasses.

    Your best bet would be to check with your company policy and Human resources as they'd be most qualified to address your questions and concerns. Good luck

    I had lasik done just before I started driving. I have the night vision reduction so I try to drive days only. Dry eyes also is a problem but I just keep the eye drops close.
