I'm replacing the 5 inch flex pipe on my truck.
I see that there are a few different kinds of clamps. What is the correct type?
They do have to be replaced whenever you replace the flex pipe correct?
Correct exhaust clamp

I use the ones called a “step clamp” you can use the flat band clamps, but they can be aggravating in certain positions. I also smear a little grease on the inside of them and anything else you want to take apart in the future. Like exhaust tips, elbows etc.

As @062 stated the stepped clamps tend the work much better with flex pipe to steel pipe. A small bead of high temp rtv sealant to the clamp joint will help seal small leaks at the seam.
I prefer to use flat style bands on pipe to pipe joints . The "easy seal" brand comes to mind as high quality. These clamps stretch when tightening so they are considered 1 time use. The biggest weak point on most cheaper brands is the bolts will snap when trying to close the gap.pushbroom, Rideandrepair, Dino soar and 1 other person Thank this. -
I like the stainless step clamps, the type that have a full circle, no gaps.Theyre made like a silicone hose clamp, overlapping an inch or more. Others with aluminum foil for gaps, always leak, break when torqued. I usually keep them as long as they’re working, often replacing new shiny ones with new mufflers, and elbows, re using the old ugly ones if needed down under. Stainless last’s a long time, they’re costly, but worth it.I keep any old one that’s still good. For a spare. Also have patched a cross pipe with a short straight 5” slip joint, as only the end at elbow was rusty.Saves $$$. Ready to re do all of mine soon. Y pipe always cracks at the weld. The flat ones are good for a small hole, To cover up, till you can replace pipe.

Use a preformed or a "stepdown" clamp. Tighten it evenly. I prefer Donaldson. The same folks who make the filters. I like their design. Rarely do i have problems with theirs compared to other brands. They about $15
