Hey everybody, new to the form, need some help with my truck. A few months ago I started loosing coolant in my 13' KW with paccar engine and i'd have to add periodically. I hadn't had the truck that long and assumed it just went through a little coolant like my cummins ISX use to. I then started getting water in fuel light. I would drain it and it looked like pink lemonade coming out. Failed catastrophically shortly after. Dumped gallons of coolant in one night. Pete dealer diagnosed and found passenger side fuel tank heater failed. Had it replaced, drove 500 miles home water in fuel code again. Drained, called dealer, dealer said it was most likely residual... After that I would check it/drain it every fill up. I would still get a little coolant in there, and would still loose a little. Around half a shot glass every 500-800 miles. Frustrated, I took it to a local truck mechanic who found what we thought were shut off valves to the fuel tank heaters. Closed them and fuel contamination slowed down but i'm still getting some coolant in fuel. It seems to only happen after the truck has been sitting for a day or two and I drive it. I've been battling this problem for 2 months now and it has cost me entirely too much money and down time. I hate to take it to the dealer who keeps the truck for days and charges an arm and a leg. I've thought about bypassing the fuel tank heaters since I rarely run in cold climate. I was wondering if I could get any input from you guys, and what my next course of action should be besides bend over and take it to the dealer. Thanks!

Did you clean all of the coolant from the fuel system after replacing the heater.? It very well could be residual still floating around at the bottom of the tanks. This engine does not have any known problems with coolant in fuel that I am aware of, like the ISX 15 does with injector cups. It is very unlikely that you have 2 failures in separate places that cause coolant in fuel.

They dropped and drained both tanks when they replaced the heater. It has been around 8000 miles since replacement.

So bypass them to rule them out. Is there a heater in the driver side tank? Was that one replaced or checked for leaks too?

What you describe is every indication of a head gasket leaking. If you let it go too long it will be a full replacement of you engine. Have a qualified mechanic check it soon.

Do you have fuel/water separator with coolant flowing to it?

Sorry I didn't notice these replies. It ended up being the coolant heater they replaced started leaking again. Found a shut off valve running from the coolant tank to the heaters. Just shut it off, stopping the coolant flow to the heaters. After that, no more coolant in fuel. Wish I would have been smart enough to just figure that out in the first place!
