What is the relationship between the engine coolant and engine oil temps? I had one driver tell me if the oil temp gets hotter than the coolant temp it is a bad thing. Is this true? My oil temp was hotter than the coolant when I came over donner pass . The coolant temp dropped lower than the oil temp shortly after cresting the summit and going down . Then the oil came down to about ten degrees cooler than the coolant.Should the oil always be cooler than the coolant or what? What is normal temp differences between the two?

What kinda engine as long as oil dosent go over 250 that's not good if your oil temp is hot but coolant normal then you have a problem in the oil system like oil thermastat bearing and such if cool temp is hot then oil will be hot.check your fan hub check to see if the rad is plugged that will do it quick I just fixed a pete 389 running hot on oil and cool pulled charge air cooler and the rad core was plugged solid cleaned it and went back to normal.

oil temp will run about 20 to 25 degrees hotter than coolant on hard pulls nothing to worry about.

Like Gear Head said, oil is normally hotter than coolant. 195 or so for coolant and 215 for oil, ballpark.

Hello everyone, I have the same problem on my mx13, uphills the oil temp goes up 250, sometime 260 while the water stay around 200/210 always uphill.
On plain, water is 180 oil 220 and I’m pretty sure was working different before the summer. I remember only about 10 to 20 degrees difference between water and oil.

Already changed the sensor and thermostat

Have you ever put stop leak in cooling system?
