Have a 2014 780 with a D13, it has the piece of junk Borg-Warner Cool-Logic electric fan clutch (no air). It just spins with the RPM now - they don't make these anymore because of the high failure rate.
I know Kit Master sells a conversion kit to make it an air operated unit.
Has anyone ever done this? Is this something I can do myself?
I believe but could be wrong you don't have to remove the radiator to get the clutch system out?
I know the ECM needs to be reflashed - problem is the closest Volvo dealer is 3 hours away once I do the install....

Radiator will not have to be removed. Just have to work in the tight space.

Going to a shop. What a waste, usually. Just unfasten the shroud and smoosh it forward. That'll make the room to yank the clutch out. I never unfasten the expansion tank as suggested above. Horton's reman 79A9644 and new 99A9644 both fit through. The mounting nuts are 15mm and hard to slip a wrench on because it is too wide; grind down the box end of the wrench to make it thinner and it'll slip into place to remove the nuts. Get rid of the DOT quick-connect fitting on the clutch and put a compression fitting on. All quick-connect fittings have O-rings that will eventually go bad. I run 3 feet of new 1/4" tubing from the fitting and install the clutch. Then it's easy to put a 1/4" brass compression union between the line and the line to the clutch solenoid. There's no room after installation to easily insert fittings onto the clutch.
When working alone, insert the clutch with a rope or a rubber strap with S hook attached. You don't want to let it slip out of your hands. It's heavy.plasticVNL670 Thanks this. -
As for that borgwarner Cool Logic clutch, it seems to have been discontinued for unreliability. From the diagnostics chart, I gather that if you unplug the clutch, and it does not come on within 30 seconds of running at high idle, it's bad.
I think the "CONVERSION KIT" that I'm seeing is a new clutch + solenoid and maybe a harness and some fittings. That part No. is 85147377 for many 2010 volvos. The dealer price will be tres expensive when you can buy the reman clutch and a new solenoid at Fleetpride and save $500. The catch is it seems you'd have to re-program the ECU (according to the PDF attachment) to work with the new clutch. You'd have to be sure you have a way to wire the new solenoid up, and whether it would come from the wiring that's on the alternator bracket that was intended for the electric clutch. My solution would be to find out what's in that Volvo 85147377 kit, part number by part number, and then get those part numbers individually when needed, minimizing the expense. The BorgWarner Cool Logic itself is super hard to find -- ebay and vanderhaags have it now and then.

usually conversion kit for this comes with new hub clutch pulley it is still electric just the latest and greatest supposably, doable to convert to an air clutch but need to change parameter in ecu not reprogramm.
-
by the way kit is around 2000 and as far as i know almost impossible to find.

That exact kit does not cross to a air operated clutch it sends it to the new system of electric clutch that volvo is using today. horton can be installed but it needs a parameter flash and it is not available in a kit. need fan clutch and new fan blade.
You will Unplesantly suprised when you open that box just to find a new design electric clutch inside.
