I have a small catering business where we pull around our mobile catering trailer and I need more storage for food and supplies to go to larger events. It can get a used Uhaul 14 foot cab over box dually for $3,500 that has a towing capacity fo 7klb. How do I convert it to a mobile cold storage at 35 degrees. I'm in souther California, often 105-110 degree summer days. Obviously paint the roof white, what kind of small top-mount reefer. What kind of flooring insulation, wall & roof insulation, roll up door insulation? etc. Food grade for safety, but no inspection or certs needed. How would you do it, details please.

$3,500 is about $3,000 too much for a used U-Haul . They are. The most poorly maintained vehicles on the road.http://uhaulsafetyalert.org/UHaul_problems.htm
I'd never have my business depending on one.Lonesome Thanks this. -
I taught McGiver everything he knows. But I would opt for a used box/reefer unit instead of conversion. My main concern with your proposal is gross weight. Do some serious research. My guess is that you will be overweight for a U Haul chasis. ALL chasis flex to some degree. This is not something to toy with. Make sure b4 you do it.

I would not go with a U-Haul dolly to move the food to the trailer!!!
Like stated they are the worst in repair, U-haul only works the workers at all of the locations on a part time basis, they get no benefits or anything, The trucks are hammered mechanically wise, They are not taken well care of, Ever heard "Drive it like a Rental"? That is where this phrase came from! I would not do this, Setting it up would cost you way to much money only to be relying on a not reliable chassis!!

There may be some insulation issues as well for a box that was not intended to be cold storage, the thing may not be insulated enough to pull the temps you need with a refer unit sized to the box. as well as sealing issues.

Personally, I would look for a used refrigerated truck, VS trying to do what you're proposing. You will need a lot of insulation, a refrigeration unit, a way to run the refrigeration unit, some sort of covering for the insulation, etc.....

Yeah, a regular insulated reefer truck has way more than you could do to a U-haul truck. You might try and look into a freezer type thingy like an ice cream truck uses with dry ice. Different sizes are available.

Not worth the trouble, buy an insulated box with small refrigeration unit on it.
