The pic shown is securement on a flatbed, but you can do the same if you have 40'+ bottom.

Up front, you may have to use a ratchet on each side instead of one in the middle due to lack of room.

I always use some straps in addition just to keep DOT off my back even if the can is empty.

If you have a 37 or 38 foot lower deck with a 40' container, you can not legally pull it in California. (or 2 20's)

My prefered meathod for securing the can is to run a chain at the front through the holes in the bottom corners of the can, then hook that chain to its self, run the chain down through the spool behind it, then pop it up over the next spool, then down again and hook the stake pocket a few down and put your ratchet binder between.

Then on the back of the can I will run my chains from the upper corner's of the can to the rear most spool on the trailer, then do the weave and chain again. I tie off the excess chain with a couple of heavy zip ties.

Then I will toss a strap over the rear and over the front about 10' from the ends of the can and sinch em down good, I also twist the strap so it doesnt flap in the wind and beat against the can.

Thanks guys, thats the info I was looking for , California will never see my truck, no desire to deal with their BS.

I thought Ca. allowed EMPTY cans to overhang on a step-deck, but not loaded. But I could be wrong or things could have changed.

they will allow empties, or would the last time I was out that way, but really overhanging one is a good way to get some unwanted attention.

It shouldnt matter as long as its empty as FMSCA rules say it can hang over 5' front or rear as long as its secured properly.

    Only when empty.

Looks like California is just enforcing the Federal rule to me.
