I have a 05 w900 with a c15 acert mxs. I thought the fuel filter on the engine itself was the primary and the fuel filter on the frame was the secondary. I have been having problems with filters plugging up. So I am wanting to try a different approach.. wanting to use the fs1212 fleetguard...where does it go...on the head mounted to the frame or engine? And run the cat 256-8753 where does it install? See I am confused. Need suggestions.
confused on fuel filters for c15 acert?

Both filters that you listed are primary filters( goes on frame ) Cat 256-8753 is a 10 micron and will flow 320 gallon per hour. FS 1212 also flows 320 GPH but filters to 20 micron. I would use the 1212. the filter to run on engine ( secondary ) would be Cat 1R-0749. hope that clears it up

Gotcha......crystal clear. thank you. So in micron filtration bigger is better?

In this specific application yes bigger is better. normally you would follow engine mfg recommendations. if you want to learn more search this forum for the filter part #s you posted.

Cetane+ Thanks this.

CAT has used 2 micron filters since the introduction of electronic engines I believe. The close tolerances of electronic injectors require the cleanest fuel possible.

Use the Cat recommended secondary filter mounted on the driver side of the engine. Then the 20m fleet filter for the primary on the frame. The lower the micron the better the filtration. the reason for two different m ratings is so the primary takes everything out of your fuel down to 20 micron. Then the secondary takes the 19-2 micron contaminates out. This way it extends your filter life, by spreading the contaminates over two filters not just one. You really need to find what is in your tanks, You should never have to change your filters more than every oil change.

I always used a 10 micron primary and the 2 micron secondary. Living in the south may be an advantage in buying decent fuel. If I should happen to buy crappy fuel I want to try to stop it in the primary and net let it even get to secondary.

The reason you want to use a FS1212 is that the 10 micron fuel filters will plug up, before a regular service interval and cause fuel flow problems that cost you power and injector problems. The very best system is a Davco, "0" restriction and 2 micron filtration and the filter is not changed untill it is needed, usually I recomend once a year, there is a great vidio on their site.
Cat does not make filters Donaldson makes them!
Just a thought!
