Got a question for you professionals out there...

I'm getting ready to start this trucking journey... I know I first need to get a CLP. I found this website that provides step by step instructions on the process:
How to Obtain a CDL License in California | America Truck Driving | Commercial Truck Driving Schools in Orange County and Riverside CA

However, towards the bottom of that page, it states that when I show up at the DMV to do the skills test, it says, "You are required to bring the type of vehicle you want to drive (in this case, a long-haul truck)"

Wait... what? Is that right? How in the heck am I supposed to manage that if I don't have a truck? I'm just getting my CLP so I can find a company that provides paid CDL training (I'm aiming for Schneider). That has to be misinformation, right? I'm assuming the DMV has an actual truck on the lot that you can perform the skills test on?

Or is that part supposed to be for when you are actually applying for a CDL? And doesn't apply to the CLP part?

Can someone please clarify how this works? Thanks in advance.

When you got your first license you brought a car.

    Bigger license bigger vehicle.

Something doesn't sound right about that... just to clarify. I am applying for a CLP... not a CDL.

    Okay, I will bite.

Why do you need a "CLP" to get a CDL?

The written exams for the permit DO NOT require a CMV, that is the skills test to get your actual license. Go get your permit and then go to school, they provide the CMV for the skills portion of the exam.

To get your CLP you just need to bring the ID required by your state, fees for the tests, pass the required tests. For CDL you are required to pass General Knowledge, Combination, Air Brakes. I would advise that you also study/pay/pass endorsements for tanker, doubles-triples (one test) and HazMat. It will never be more convenient to get your endorsements and only the HazMat needs to be renewed every few years or when moving your CDL physical address to another state. In my state, endorsements cost under $20 each. Every endorsement allows you to haul more types of freight. Get them all if you can. HazMat can cost $150 plus for all of the required steps. If you cannot afford it, get it after you start working. Tanker is required for some freight carried inside or on other trailers. It is very easy to pass.

Right, you need the CLP to attend cdl school. The cdl school will provide the truck for the road test at completion of cdl school.

There's better choices out there than Schneider as a first company. Yeah, the training is good, but the pay is low.
