I finished my week of orientation at Conway. I passed the driving and backing test :)

The next day heads of the company came and gave spoke to everyone about safety and the importance of doing things right and by company standards.
It was a pretty relaxed yet interesting day.

The final day we went on a drive in the company van and practiced the smith system. For anyone not familiar with this you can probably google it and read all about it.
At the end of the day we had a written test that was based on the information we went over the entire week of orientation.

I then got assigned my finisher - which is my husband.
I was lucky that way. Most companies if not all are in need of female finishers/trainers. I probably would have had to wait a week or more for them to find one for me.
They are few and far between. SO - on a good note if you are a female who wants to go solo and get in with this company after you are here for a while you could probably make a lot of money being a female finisher.

Right now I am on day 4 on the road, right outside of Oklahoma City to be exact. I have 10000 miles to do and want to do every mile of it. There was talk of them having me back after 8000 miles but I would prefer to stay out the whole 10000. But what I want and what will actually happen - who's to know.

I did drive through OK City and Wichita Kansas today. Altogether today I drover 583 miles.
Now I am crashing out and going to Texas tomorrow.

I hope to hit the west coast sometime within the next week. Come on planners :) Seattle?

Congrats on finishing orientation and hitting that open road with the hubby! I'm thinking about going OTR again and have been intrigued by Con-Way TL. Your posts have brought up a lot of good and valuable information. Good luck out there, driver!

I have thought about going to truck driving school for years. I currently have a Class B CDL and have been a school bus driver for years. I went out on the road with a friend for a couple of months about 12 years ago. I was fascinated by the lifestyle/job. The only draw back for me, was that my kids were still young and I couldn't wait to get home to them. Now, they are grown and it seems like it might be a good time in my life to start a new adventure. Rather than sitting home being an empty nester and wondering what to do next, I could be out driving & making some money. Right now I'm researching the different schools/companies. This thread and your awesome detail of your time in school helped tremendously. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with everyone. I wish you the best of luck.

I now have been out with my finisher for 3 weeks. So far I have driven through Dallas, Philadelphia, St Louis, Austin, Laredo, Fort Worth, to name some larger cities. I am headed to Grantsville, Utah. I enjoy the bigger cities. The mountains and hills can be intimidating. After this drop I should be heading back to grad out. :)

Thanks for the great information ! What type of truck have you been driving and what transmission, and is it the same type truck and transmissions as the school has.
