Okay so who are some of the companies that pay by the hour?

I totally agree paid by the mile is crap! most of my time running TCU has been spent sitting at the shiper or consignee

Most major oil companies pay by the hour because they don't want the driver speeding to make money. I got paid for every minute I was there.

Almost any trucking company with some sort of local or logistics operation will pay by the hour. I've been paid by the hour for the last 10 years and here is something I've learned: it doesn't change the time pressure when driving and most drivers still act like they have to bust a gut to save 3 seconds. It makes no sense, the longer they take the more money they make, but that still will seek every shortcut and rush like maniacs.

I believe that OTR guys think pay by the hour will magically change most of their problems, it doesn't. It's a matter of "the grass always looks greener in the neighbor's yard."

When you boss pays by the hour he also monitors your time more closely than when you are paid my the mile. If your boss isn't very strict with your time and putting time pressure on you as a driver often the driver will put time pressure on himself so that he can be a little quicker here and there and then have one big block of time as a long break period.

I clock in at the same time each day, I'm penalized if I'm more than 5 minutes late. I also clock out at the same time each day, or so I try. A bad day has me clocking out 30 minutes late and not having my usual 1 hour off for "lunch" at the same overnight hour.

Pay by hour is no magic bullet but many OTR drivers assume it would be one.
