By 2017 all vehicles, personal and commercial, are supposed to be required to have some form of collision mitigation system built in. As far as I have read.

So far Ive had 1 1/2 of my 2 years experience in a truck using the radar systems in the bumper. The people i have worked with and myself have had them malfunction on so many occasions that it is countless. I80 toll road, straight shot, no traffic around. Truck locks up brakes after coming to an overpass and says 0ft following distance briefly.

You know that car that is always up your ### while heading down the road? Let me tell you how funny it is to have your truck automatically brake check them and send them swerving all over the road to avoid hitting you.

Experience the rollercoaster of fear, anger, and misfortune that you ride while on a 25 mph exit this winter and you ditch it or power slide your trailer because the automatic braking system decides that is the right moment to test its abilities.

These systems have a good purpose. But they don't seem to make anything actually better. It is quite a scary feeling to be on cruise control minding your own business when your truck hits the brakes hard enough to lock your seat belt with no prior warning. And for no reason.

This is coming from dozens of peoples experiences that happen on somewhat regular occassions, from several of the large companies utilizing these systems. Soon to be a manditory nightmare. Worse yet is WHEN a terrible accident happens, the automatic computer braking system blames the drivers. I have seen the computer printouts that show "driver inputs". When the system malfunctions and applies the foundation brakes, it shows the brake pedal was applied with no distinction between the system or driver error. Since they cant ticket or fine a computer, the fault will always be the driver.

Personally, I believe that all of this computer controlled, high tech nonsense wouldn't be needed if people would just do their jobs properly and pay attention.

If a truck already has one that's disabled, would one have to activate it?

Nope. Only 2017 and newer. I think proprietary volvo might be the safest. They have done the most research and have had these systems for somewhere around or over 10 years. What worries me is two possibilities.

    1. Seeing this mandate coming, there will be lots of start up companies with little to no experience trying get in on the action. Remember no law is passed unless there is to be monetary gain for someone. None of which will be any good right away.

    2. Manufactures aren't going to want to lose money to possibility 1, causing them to rush and beat them to it. A rushed product is never good.

I'm going to be that grumpy old guy in a 2016 Kia or some other not that fancy car refusing to buy something new 30 years from now. HAHA

Say you have a 2015 with it right now. Lawfully it isn't required as of 2015. I would wait until 2017 and rip that #### off in protest. There isn't anything they can do about it since the truck is older than 2017, but I'd get my point across.

I would agree and add that I think that much of this technology would not be needed if the Carriers put a little more thought and effort into there hiring of drivers. I just read that the top for hire carriers have reported that 88% of all applicants do not or will not qualify to be hired by the company. However only a fraction of that 88% are notified or turned down prior to bringing them to orientation. It doesn't say what percentage of that are coming or applying to come to the cdl schools. If they were more concerned with quality over quantity then they would not have to take all of the technological precautions they are implementing now. But the cost of the technology is less then the money they make by getting warm bodies in seats.. So it will only change when 1 of the industry leaders in size and revenue decides that they value people more than they value the dollar.. IMHO..

Does anybody else have fun stories of system glitches and malfunctions? I can always fuel the fire with some of my own crash and burn out-takes. Like my truck that said i was experiencing a roll over event 97 times in a row. On a clear day, straight road, cruise set at 8 under the speed limit. I was written up for unsafe driving

The recruiters don't care. As long as they fill those orientation classes they make bank. I started through the cr England driver school. We started with 110 people. 48 made it to the actual test. And quite a few couldn't pass the test even after half a dozen attempts and CR kept paying for the tests until they made the cut. They also have i assume a very high CSA score with how many accidents they cause.
