I've delivered to a lot of grocery stores and this is what I observed. As an assistant, you will be doing manual labor unloding trucks, stocking shelves, etc.
If I were you, I'd get the OTR experience. You will then have many more choices. -
Driver merchandiser assistant. Or, in laymens terms, bottom of the ladder grunt, lifting 45lb cases of Coke 9 hours a day, 6 days a week. Can you say, "Dang, my back aches"?
-
I wouldn't do it. I worked for Coke for 6 years as a delivery driver and it was the worst job I ever had. Long days, grueling work, horrible management and very angry customers. The pay wasn't that great either. Just my .02.

Coke is a good company to work for if you want to be home daily, and you want weekends off. In the branch i work, we get paid more of what the other delivery companies pays (bud, coors, pepsi, frito lay, etc).
The position as assistant is great to get experience and be ready for an opening. Coke usually works with promotions... they only hire people from out the company when there is nobody qualified or there is no body.
after you get your own route, you get to know your custumers, and yes, there are mad and mean people out there, but nothing that i can't handle. -
I see Coke merchandisers every weekend at my grocery store in Kingman (Smiths) delivering and setting up. I go shopping either Sat/Sun at 7 am, and they are there without fail. Maybe weekends off is a regional thing.

those are only merchanisers, not driver merchandisers, they do work weekends and night shifts sometimes, but the driver teams, have usually weekends off. I know of some areas that work a night shift or weekend shifts for drivers, but not everybody.

I worked for a independent Coke dealer for a year,......It was one of the lowest paying jobs I have ever had,...But I was 21 and it was a great way to network with other company's and find something better,....Which I did after 1 year,..I worked for the next company far 12 years before moving on,...
I'd say go for it and see what happens,....You may really like it and stick around,...Or you might find something even better and still be able to stay local,... -
You didn't work for Viking did you???,.......I did and it sucked,....
