I would like to hear your stories and experiences of when this happened and what you did to get paid.
Nothing major happening right now, we were just talking about this and I wanted to see others experiences with this.

Never unload a cod without securing payment first, once it is off your truck you can't legally reload it if they refuse to pay. Explain that payment is due prior to offload and inspection and if anything is wrong (damage) it will be settled in accordance with the company policy.
Better yet, payment up front if it is not a regular customer that has established trust. -
I read a sign once that said "In God We Trust, all others pay cash"...I guess a similar statement could be said for COD customers.
In God We Trust, all others pay up front...passingthru69, Ranger309 and brian991219 Thank this. -
Yup, always say that it is company policy to get paid before it comes off the trailer. If they refuse to pay you are within your rights to charge mileage back to your yard and charge daily storage. I've had to threaten it a few times but they always seemed to come up with the money after I tell them that lol
Kayrex_Aurayn and misterG Thank this. -
Payment first, unload later. No questions.
All they can do is refuse.
Then you send it back to the shipper. -
Once we did a COD for $400.00 and I got a check. I didn't deposit right away and when I did I got the return check with "refer to maker". I called the dealer and no answer not even the receptionist. Call the next day the same and again the following day...nothing. I then called the contact on the order to his cell who told me they went out of business.
It's was surprising as it was a car from Ready load board and I thought they had some sort of safety net...I thought wrong.Terry270 Thanks this. -
COD customers are easy. You pull up they pay. No pay no unload. Give a short time frame to wait. 10 minutes or so. No pay pull away. Charge for the trip to the yard and storage. Once we pull away we will not stop. They will pay the full rate back to the yard. Once the car is unloaded in the yard. Daily storage on a calendar basis. If it's there 1 minute that's 1 day. Once the clock hits midnight that's the next. Wait till you are ready to deal with them from there. I require cash to remove it from my lot. After the cash is paid. They can have access to their car. Done.

That is what I train my drivers to follow. They don't always. I say that if the customer goes off with the car and hasn't paid, it's coming off your check because it would at least still be in our possession if he hadnt unloaded it and we'd have legal recourse.
I have had friends say they called the cops and cop said to pay up,
