is the k40 plus 6000watt antenna a good set up on the cobra 29 ltd?
it will be used for local talkin but area is heavy with trees and mountains.
i just bought the k40 antenna, didnt tune it yet, AND also was wondering if the magnetic base would work better than mounting the antenna on a bracket.
(is set up is on a utility truck)
Cobra 29 LTD with K40 plus 6000. Good set up?

6000watts is what it the antenna can handle but the radio only puts out 4 stock,
if your in the mountians a fire stik would be better they are good a getting a signal over things. since you already have the K40 I would use the magnet mount and put that baby right center on your roof for the best ground plane.
Good Luck and 7s and 3s to ya buddy -
ok.. here is the truck...
i returned the k40 plus i had.
i have two fiberglass antennas from radio shack...i dont want to use these
i would get a wilson 1000 ...
the questions i have are.. with the wilson 1000, are the steel ladder racks going to effect the antenna
i dont really want the magnetic mount because i do construction/logging and the HEIGHT issues already is bothering me.
the fiberglass antennas are 4' and mounted on top of bed the overall height is 9'6"
with the k40 it was 12'4"
i want the best ANTENNA but i am having trouble with the mounting options and height options.

Anything around your antenna can affect it. You won't know how much until you try it. With the type truck you have, your options are limited. A 102" steel whip is the best and probably won't be bothered by your ladder rack. A SS whip will work well where others won't, toolboxes etc.
I used to have a ladder rack and never did get an ideal antenna situation. I would run the two I see in your picture, if they tuned out O.K. Or, I would bend a piece of stainless steel into a front fender mount and mount a Wilson 1000 on it. Did this one time and it worked great. Didn't like the look on my slick little pickup so I drilled a hole and moved it to the roof, but on a work truck with ladder rack, I wouldn't be worried about looks. (Actually no CB antenna looks "good" on a vehicle IMHO, but I never let that stop me............good luck with it!)

ok... went to local CB shop and the guy looked at my truck and told me that either the WILSON 2000 TRUCKER mounted on bracket or the Astatic ALL1K 1000 Watt Antenna would better than wilson.
here is pic of antenna; http://www.walcottcb.com/astatic-all1k-1000-watt-high-performance-cb-antenna-p-1974.html
he told me this would work better because its long, half of the white base (which is mounted behind rear window center on bed) is above the roof and would be better than the wilson 1000 or 2000 in my case..
its mounted on the bed but RED ANT LIGHTS comes on... also dont hear much activity from other cb'ers...
ALSO, when i key the mic, the red ANT is on, but if i touch the wipe with my hand the red light turns off... hopefully someone can help me with my problem
how do i get rid of the red light? and is there even the right choice antenna? -
also, the SWR on cb is like 1 or 1.2 on ch 20, 1 and 40... they are all low SWR readings
-
I wouldn't give that much for a fiberglass antenna if it was me. If my SWR was low, and your sure those readings are accurate, I wouldn't worry about the red lite. There is an adjustment for it I believe, but if I had good SWR, the light would be ignored.
-
if i key the mic, the RED ANTENNA light comes on...but if i TOUCH THE WHIP of the antenna with my fingers, the light turns off... its a new CB and new antenna... i had the dual fiberglass on their and no light was on. now that the astatic antenna is on, red light is on... i also know for a fact that this antenna is not performing the way it should.
i tested it this mornin with a buddy and could not hear him clearly from 3 miles away. i know it should be better -
I wouldn't put much stock in that SWR reading your seeing on the radios meter...Those things are notorious for being inaccurate...
I would check the SWR with a in-line SWR Meter first, and see what it says, then check your coax connections, and the antenna mount...
Sounds like you may not be getting a good ground at the mount...
One things for sure, I wouldn't ignore the warning light until you've double checked everything else.
Could also be if you have too low a DK, it could be setting off the light. But that wouldn't explain why you can't hear. -
listen to this...
was talking on cb this afternoon. cb power turns off. checked the fuse on the positive wire and fuse was blown. put in another fuse and the Cobra 29 LTD chrome started smokin!!! only bought the thing last week... when back to store, they took it back...
now i have the cobra 29 WX NW ST, same thing pretty much...
with a new coax cable, cig liter power supply and antenna mounted... the swr is just under 2... i need it to be lower so im guessing its not a good enough ground. the astatic antenna is now mounted center of bed and way past roof. since its mounted on the bed, maybe the rubber bushings from the body mounts are takin power away...
if i need a better ground, i will ground frame to bracket correct? and what kind of wire do i use? someone told me a regular thick wire will do, but others say i should use a ground strap? advice?
