Hey guys I have a silly question but I'm in a bind and I need to confirm I'm not losing my mind. My truck is being worked on by Velocity Truck. I am having a new clutch installed. The clutch brand is OTR (from Fleet Pride). So I was told yesterday that the clutch I brought DOES NOT have the ability to be adjusted. Therefore, the distance from the throwout bearing to the clutch brake is static with know way to open or close the gap. I have limited knowledge, but something is telling me this can't be the case. Naturally they had me buy a clutch from them. They are supposed to be done with the truck tomorrow. Is it possible that a clutch wouldn't be adjustable?? I'm thinking it is adjustable but they just don't know how to do it. I've seen three different type- one being automatic, another just a bolt that you turn while pushing in, then one where you take a bolt out and remove a "key" from the slot then spin the disk inside and replace the key. If it's this last style, maybe they aren't clear on this type. The truck is a 07 Peterbilt 379.
Clutch replacement question, not adjustable?

It is possible to be a solo or auto adjust and they can be prone to early failures of the adjustment mechanism and typically will never outlive a manual adjust.
If it’s not too late go with a genuine Eaton manual adjust. I prefer easy pedal on the application, but traditional would suffice as well.Rideandrepair, Bean Jr., bjytech and 6 others Thank this. -
On 379, I'd absolutely go manual adjust and a 308925-25 genuine Eaton new 2050 ft/lb. The Solo doesn't work as well with linkage style vs hydraulic control of clutch.

The techs I know who have used the solo clutch in fleets say they are great. They are self adjusting, not non adjusting. It would have worked fine in your 379.
I still agree with the others though. I prefer a genuine Eaton manual adjust clutch. I always use the part # @spsauerland suggested.
If they said it wouldn't work, they lied.Rideandrepair, Bean Jr., rollin coal and 3 others Thank this. -
Appreciate the replies! OK so I gather one way or the other the clutch is adjustable. Beyond that it's just preference of manual vs automatic (solo). I can say the manual is $500 more dollars. I found my part number, here is what I have. https://www.fleetpride.com/parts/dr...nts/clutch/otr-clutch-tt20892582h?cclcl=en_US
So it is possible that this (national truck chain) mechanic doesn't know how to do the initial adjustment of the solo style. I'm trying to gather up the appropriate ammunition when I approach them in a couple hours. I'm already ticked at how long they've had my truck at 16 days to install a transmission that I literally brought to them the day I came in! Freakin' 30 hours of labor!! Wish I broke down at home where the labor is reasonable. Thanks guys.Rideandrepair and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -
i may have seen 1 self adjusting clutch live to the end of adjustment. normaly they get stuck about half way. im gonna do a science project on a new truck we got that has a self adjusting clutch to see how long i can make it last.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Is there a quick way to identify the self adjusting properties with the clutch in my hand? I don't want to be standing there with them trying to rush me and over-talk me in order to escape responsibility.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
The guys i spoke of earlier are getting 7-800k on these self adjusting clutches.
@Problematique, yes, that would have worked. I've used a few FP clutches with no problems for customers who needed a cheaper option.Rideandrepair and Problematique Thank this. -
great. thanks guys, tremendous help.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
When he said "not adjustable" he probably meant it is not manually adjustable.
Rideandrepair, Bean Jr., spsauerland and 1 other person Thank this.
