I got my Class A in 2021, so it was before the ELDT standards. My son is a nurseryman for the City Parks Dept and has begun their training program to be an arborist/climber. One of the requirements is that he get a Class B CDL, on his own, but they reimburse for tuition. My question is how different or more difficult the training is. I feel like, all things being equal, a Class A is more valuable. But he wants to climb trees, not drive trucks, so it might not be worth the extra effort to get a license he doesn't need, and without recent tractor trailer experience, the Class A won't be worth much anyway. If anyone has done both or trained both, I'd appreciate your input. Thanks
Class B vs Class A training and DMV test

The Class-A is worth a ton of money. Tell him to get the Class-A. That Class-A is money in the bank because he may need it in the future.
Don't need recent experience for a Class-A job. Companies are recruiting from Class-A cdl schools all over the country.ducnut, TexasRiverRat and Jamie01 Thank this. -
If he can back a trailer and make turns with out hitting the curb or stationary objects go for the class A

it's cheaper, and quicker to take the road/skills tests.
when i worked at 2 different CDL schools, we had many that only wanted the B as thier job required it, like linemen, water/sewer dept, etc. -
Posts #2 -- #4 above all make valid points.
With that said -- a class "A" CDL is indeed a nice "piggybank" of sorts, and makes for a terrific "plan B"....in case the arborist pursuit mentioned above somehow loses its luster, later...
The class "A" CDL will open more doors in the job world, that pay significantly more money (if it's used properly). If he doesn't use the CDL it doesn't go "stale"....in a few years (& I speak on that from personal experience); it's not hard to find carriers that will hire and train him without previous (or recent) experience.
Heck....now's actually a great time to get a CDL....and then sit on the CDL sidelines for a while, anyway.

I would get class A. It wouldn't be that much extra work. Even driving a class B truck, he may find himself in a position where he needs to pull equipment on a trailer, which if the trailer weighs over 10k, would require a class A.

Jamie01 Thanks this.

Will they reimburse for the CLASS A?

About the only people who tested for class B's at our school where the ones who just could not attain the skills to pass the skills tests with a trailer. The only real difference in A & B is the trailer.
