Question guys, what are your opinions of taking a class b job fresh out of cdl school? I have a class A with doubles and triples, tanker and hazmat. I'm leaning toward this gig because of the ot involved and the decent pay. Plus it's a local Monday through Friday schedule most weeks. Anything to consider for future career moves? What's the next logical higher paying job after a gig like this?
Thanks for any help...

Got yourself covered for any possibilities. If it doesn't work out you always got a back up. Had i been able to secure a decent local gig driving a class b i would've.

Never hurts to be over-qualified.

Disagree. You have a Class A, use it. Get experience. To be a success in life you have to plan long term. Owner Operators make about 150,000 per year. Some upper 300,000s or more. Class B jobs will top out about 48,000 per year. Sure that is good to start but does not have the upside. Where do you want to be 10 years from now.

I started with a B. Got a year experience then went with a company that had both so I drove both. Got that experience now only pull Class A. With a B job, you'll have off most if not all weekends and maintain a 'regular' schedule since most operate within normal business hours. I say it's a great idea. I sacrificed that schedule with a long hours night gig but hey I needed the money.

I did class b ready mix for 2 years after truck school and then it was really hard to find any company willing to give me a job doing class a. Your experience will be in class b so that's the jobs you will be qualified for. I had to go to the oil field to find a company that would let me drive class a again. Just keep that in mind, insurance companies are the ones signing off on your qualifications.

You could do a refresher but then your class b experience doesn't count towards class a experience so you would be starting from scratch.
As another poster said going with a company that does both class b and class a is the way to go. I did that in the oil field, they required 1 year of experience which I had class b and still had my class a license with all endorsements.
After I was hired I told them I wanted to do class a. I spent a year and a half doing that then jumped into an awesome ltl job when the oil field slowed down and we were all going to be getting laid off.
Either way keeping your class a will always be good but just keep in mind that if and when you decide you want to do class a you will have some hoops to jump through and re establish yourself.
