OWNER OPERATORS BEWARE OF CLARK TRANSFER INC in Harrisburg, PA!
The purpose of this post is to help anyone who is thinking about signing on with Clark Transfer. I do not mean to offend anyone, just calling it as i have seen it first hand and heard 1st hand from other un-named clark drivers.
This was the only forum i have found about Clark before i signed on with clark transfer. i hope it helps fellow owner operators avoid a financially bad decision. Clark will make things sound good but they are stretching the truth. please read on if you are thinking about leasing on to clark.
I quit Clark on 11-14-2012 due to lack of income after 7 weeks.
I am posting to warn anyone and everyone about Clark transfer. Their pay is misleading. I have never made so little with a truck in 6 years of owner operating. They tell you that the tours will pay about $300 to $700 per day. Most i saw were $280-$320 per day for solos. after expenses this isnt enough. the larger $$ numbers were for teams. at 1 point i sat for 6 days straight at $100 per day.
$100 per day for 6 days straight is not enough for a guy with a payment on a nice truck.
After expenses your would be better off as a company driver somewhere else!
They have a very high turnover rate because of the pay.
I ran into a nice husband wife team who have been at Clark for 5+ years. They were lead Drivers on the Les Miserables show. The wife told me how the show was going to sit in chicago for 3 weeks. She was afraid they would not be able to afford to go home for Thanksgiving to see family. SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING IS WRONG..... DOESNT IT?
I met several solos who are clearing about $1500 per week after fuel BUT berfore other expenses like truck payments, ins, and so on.
I met a guy who had been there for 20+ years who bounces his truck payment on a regular basis. WTF?
Another guy I met was talking to me about how in a year or 2 he wont be able to run legally in CA. He claimed he isnt making enough at Clark to justify buying another truck. He has been there for 5 or 6 years.
The teams are lucky if they clear $2500 per week after fuel.
I was with Landstar and did well there, the smart teams did close to double that or more. As a solo I cleared an average of $2500 per week there and put about 180 days/year in the logbook.
These guys at Clark are content making company drivers wages after expenses. Most cant afford to go home and wind up living like bums 365 days per year. The guys who stay do not know how to fish for freight or make multiple calls to get it or use a load board. From what i see Clark has a bunch of "glorified company drivers". Most of the drivers are nice guys but they generally do not know how to run a truck for profit or work on a truck.(please note the word "most" i did not say all)
If you are retired with additional income, a gypsy team that doesnt want to work hard, or you like devoting your life to a company with low pay who does not care about you... go for it!
Most of us deserve better.

thanks mike I appreciated that info, I was just sent an application a few minutes ago after reading their craigslist ad, and thought to do some research before jumping into a regretful situation like you did............ Ive thought about Landstar for a while, seems like a fair outfit... If you have any advice on being a first time O/O, I would be very grateful.

There's always to sides to every story. I know the people at Clark Transfer and their Owner Operators do very well. It's different than most operators are used to. It Stage equipment for musical tours and plays, you stay with the tour from city to city. The Operators that work there make a lot more than your standard owner operator. I know Clark to be very honest and straightforward about the income, paid sitting time etc. I really don't think a guy would be there for 5-6 years if it was bad??? The other owner operator that is referred to here has been there for 20 years and has problems??? I mean come on, if these owner operators are still there, Clark is obviously a good company.
truckon Thanks this. -
The ones who stay are mindless, lazy, and lack knowledge of the trucking business due to low efforts. Turnover is very very high because the money sucks.
Sounds to me like you work at clarks office. I mean come on, 2 posts and at least 1 defending clark?????70chargerman and Bsmoove77 Thank this. -
I've only got one post, in response to whomever was bad mouthing them. I do not work at Clark, I know the people there and operators who work there. I would question anyone who starts something like this to bad mouth a company. Every Trucking company is not a good fit for every owner operator and vice versa. They have close to 80 owner operators most of whom have been there a long time.
truckon Thanks this. -
Most have not been there a long time. the long timers are happy making peanuts and too scared to fight enough to see if other ventures are more profitable.
Answer this if they are so good. Why do they advertise so much on websites and radio?
if they were so good there would be a huge line of guys waiting to sign on without advertising. turn over is high due to low pay while being forced to be a lazy bum on the roadBsmoove77 Thanks this. -
In response to this post,I have a few comments to make....as owner/operator at Clark Transfer I would like to tell all of you some FACTs about this company...it is a good living, there is plenty of money to be made and with proper planning ,there is home time. If you come here and don't know how to handle your finances, you don't want to work smarter not harder, you don't want to work in a family environment, then you have made the wrong choice.I have been here for 4years and it will be my LAST job....Why would anyone want to leave?! They pay you for everything you do and my checks are always MORE than I expected! This is the only company that you always have a name ,not a number.Small company, they call you by your first name.Advertising on the Internet and various other places? Yes, of course, because they are a small company that does a fabulous job in the show industry that they are getting so busy they NEED to hire more experienced, quality drivers to handle the business that they have acquired . You really can not even make a FAIR judgement about a company in 7 weeks, seriously you needed to give it six months to make a decision. The people you spoke to did not give you a total picture of their individual situations of the money they make and the way they chose to handle their personal finances. If you can't handle your money. In your life then you can't handle it and shouldn't blame a company for the choices that you have made, there wouldn't be enough money at ANY company!Clark Transfer is a company that is working the best for us,it may not be the quote unquote BEST company out there,it is a choice you must make for your individual self. But on the other hand, don't bad mouth something that you gave little chance to . It may be right for another person. So we feel that if you are looking to work for a wonderful company and MAKE good money,Clark could be right for you. Give it at least six months and you will see what we have found out for ourselves . Send a note and we would answer any questions you might have.
nonsense007 and truckon Thank this. -
The TEAMS were so dumbed down they were happy making $2000-$2500 a week.... my last check as a solo pulling tanks was $3800 after fuel for 1 week. i sat at home for a day and a half of that too.
I seriously think you are in the office at Clark as i examine your post more.
To anyone reading this is all bs and its bad for ya. i would work for clark before some mega carrier o/o scam. The mega carriers are known for preying on dumbed down sheeple. Clark is proof that smalled companies do it too.
If a solo cant clear $2500 ave week on a consistent basis, then its not worth being a bum in a truck.
Company driver wages in your own truck... what a joke. These solos deserve at least $3000 a week(after fuel) to dedicate themselves to the show life.Last edited: Aug 26, 2013
Bsmoove77 Thanks this. -
By the way b&m the last part of your post really makes it sound like you work in the office, or just want to get a referal bonus because you need the money.....shame on you for preying on the sheeple.
Bsmoove77 Thanks this. -
Ok,let me tell you....first,no I don't work in the office. Second, fact is fact. Third, after 7weeks,you shouldn't even have an opinion to state what is right or wrong that anyone should listen to. Fourth, learn to manage your money and you will have plenty. I am glad you found a company that works for you! Clark is a specialized hauling company that wants quality drivers that know how to use there head and not just sit behind a wheel. Stay at your job of choice,it sounds very good paying and that is what you are all about. Please don't bad mouth others that work for other people. We all know what opinions are like... Clark didn't work for you and that is unfortunate, but it does work for plenty of other people. We are a great company that isn't like all the others but you have to know what you are doing and how to enjoy a job.
