Is there any benefit to changing fuel filters before the recommended interval? Is there less pressure on the fuel pump or will it give me better fuel mileage?
Cummins X-15 efficiency
Big *&% water separator FS19915 in Davco 483
Suction side FF5825NN
65,000 miles on original filters
Recommended 75,000
No noticeable loss of power or mpg but could be slight loss of mpg.
The fuel in the separator is about half way up in the bowl and the pleats are blackened.
These filters are around $100 bucks a piece.
I have a couple of each on the shelf/in the jockey box.
Thanks.

You can get the filters cheaper online! I usually by them by the case. I replace my davco when it shows time to replace on plastic. Usually 12-20 K. Those pleats always look black quickly. Even with new tanks and lines. My suction side gets replaced when my fuel filter restriction gauge goes around 5 in hg. Otherwise about every 30 k ish.

Can't believe those filters can go that many miles before clogging? I use FS19765 for my X15 and I'd say 15k max before the light comes on...

They got new long life filters out now. Price does reflect..

My ISX did them every 20K.
My Detroit every 30K to 35K.
If they didn't go south before then.Oxbow, 4wayflashers and JonJon78 Thank this. -

Any time the oil gets drained, change the fuel filters. If they clog early, change them. I don't buy the whole theory behind run them until you lose power. I'd rather not be stuck changing filters in a random rest area at 6 am in the freezing cold.
ColumbiaBoB, markk, Oxbow and 4 others Thank this. -
Yeah I’m going to change them out. Even a .1 mpg improvement will probably pay for itself 5x in the next 10,000 miles. Thanks for the advices.

$100,wow, that stings. I get Baldwin online for my series 60, about $6, primary or secondary. Plus shipping of course

I'd never go by the "recommendation". Usually I do replace them filters at the oil change, 14-15k miles, they last ok, was ok, couple of weeks ago fueled at Love's, had to replace at 12k, got fully clogged. Oil change at 15, was ok for 2k, fueled at Love's again to check it out, two times in the row.. 3k clogged up past the line, replaced. So, just watch the thing and go by the fuel level in the filter. That pump in x and isx is very picky and has always was giving problems.
