A bit of history first ..I bought this 2000 classic 525 n14 6 mos ago with recent overhaul and have never been impressed with the fuel mileage .
So last week I told my shop guy during a full service to change the air filters even tho the restriction gauge hardly showed anything .
Shop guy said my filters were dirty but not horrible .
Well 2000 miles into the new air filters and my fuel mileage has jumped up .75 mpg .
Same loads , same speeds , same operating area .

cnsper, Dave_in_AZ and tucker Thank this.

Is this the part where the guy at the shop gets beaten about the head and shoulders with a dirty air filter?

Been getting about 7mpg out of my R model mack but my Volvo with the Ved 12 has been getting around 7.3. Yup clean air filters always help. I blow mine out about once a month but go off the hard road often.

Sometimes people look at the outside of those can air filters and think they are good, but on these type you have to look inside.
Once had a guy with a Classic and his truck was burning oil like crazy. I got in the truck and noticed the restriction gauge was at max. I reset it and drove the truck around to the other side of the shop. When I got back there it was maxed out again. I took the filters out and they had started sucking the filter apart. I called him and told him the filters were bad and had probably caused internal engine damage. The filters had never been changed. They were 6 years old.

Wow ! How do you let something as simple as that go ?
I do know of a fleet where I live tho that ruined a couple n14s over air filters tho .

Back when I was 18 and apprenticing the shop I worked for at the time had a 2500 Cummins Ram for a shop truck. One day the truck starting running like garbage, smoking heavily and had no power. Our resident "super tech" spent hours on this truck trying to find the problem. Started throwing thousands in parts at it and was ready to order an injection pump. I happened to look at it one day, noticed restriction gauge was maxed. Popped open the air box and found the air filter crumpled up and jammed halfway down the intake pipe. Cleaned out the intake and put a new filter in. Ran like a top. This guy disliked me to begin with. He hated me after that lol.
