A bit of history first ..I bought this 2000 classic 525 n14 6 mos ago with recent overhaul and have never been impressed with the fuel mileage .
So last week I told my shop guy during a full service to change the air filters even tho the restriction gauge hardly showed anything .
Shop guy said my filters were dirty but not horrible .
Well 2000 miles into the new air filters and my fuel mileage has jumped up .75 mpg .
Same loads , same speeds , same operating area .
Changed my air filters and bang !

Is this the part where the guy at the shop gets beaten about the head and shoulders with a dirty air filter?
-

Minus idle time it went from 5.3 to 6.1 on the last fill up .

Sometimes people look at the outside of those can air filters and think they are good, but on these type you have to look inside.
Once had a guy with a Classic and his truck was burning oil like crazy. I got in the truck and noticed the restriction gauge was at max. I reset it and drove the truck around to the other side of the shop. When I got back there it was maxed out again. I took the filters out and they had started sucking the filter apart. I called him and told him the filters were bad and had probably caused internal engine damage. The filters had never been changed. They were 6 years old. -
I do know of a fleet where I live tho that ruined a couple n14s over air filters tho . -
i change my air filters at every pm, (run in a lot of dusty conditions) restriction gauge never shows anything but filters are always quite dirty
