Change from manual transmission to Automatic

    I have a 1990 International 4600 dump truck with a DT444 and 5 speed manual transmission. I am looking into changing it from manual to automatic. It’s hard to find any info on this. I have been told that i would have to change the gear ratio in the rear axle or replace the axle with one compatible with the auto transmission. That I would have to change the drive shaft ( which seems likely because an automatic is longer than a manual ) add cross members , add a control computer, and of course add a transmission cooler. There also is the PTO for the dump hydraulics that needs to be taken into consideration.
    The question I have is what exactly would it take to change to a automatic transmission? The information I have received came from sources that have never done a conversation. The manual transmission I have now is in need of repair and I have seen a few automatics for sale on line for reasonable prices . Any info or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated

    Save yourself tons of time and headache.......if what you want is an automatic, go buy one already equipped. What you are asking is possible but at what cost? Monetarily and time wise?

    The cost effective way would be a donor truck of the same make with all the parts allready on it. Take 2 trucks and make one good one?

    The new auto shift trucks are not automatics. They are computers doing the shifting and the engine and transmission talk to each other and the transmission can control the engine. They can do some fancy computer stuff. Like they can turn on the engine brake between shifts. They have GPS info on big hill locations. They can sense the load on the engine and change the shift points.

    Allison makes the only true automatic for trucks. They are good for city driving like garbage trucks or fire truck. They are only like 5-6 gears not good for fuel economy. If you got money to burn anything is possible.

    My intention was to find another truck with a automatic transmission set up. What I would like to know is would I have to change out the rear end and do I need to change out or add a computer ? I am not doubting anything you are saying, but it seems to me that an automatic from another international truck would mount up to the 444 engine. Adding a cross member would not be a problem and even adding a transmission cooler should not be that much of a problem either. What I am looking for for information is what would I have to do to change over. There are a few trucks on the net that are being parted out. Is it a matter of removing the manual transmission, installing the automatic, putting in the transmission cooler , drive shaft , and shift box or ?. The truck needs a clutch and may need parts replaced in the manual transmission itself. Trying to compare the costs and time between putting in new clutch etc and either repairing or buying a used manual transmission or getting a used automatic and putting that in. The truck is the one you see in the profile picture.

    The truck is the one pictured in my profile. It’s not an over the road truck. It’s a 5 speed manual , very low geared and only does around 50 mph tops. I am very familiar with having an Allison in a fire truck as I just retired after 46 years in the fire service. That’s one of the reasons I am looking to find out what it would take to change over as this truck will be used in short haul situations.

    Even a new clutch and rebuild trans will not even put a dent it what you are attempting to change over. No computer will be needed. That old Allison would be full manual controls. It's all the unexpected things that will make you pull your hair out and regret doing such a task. If your asking questions now, there will be issues, I promise.

    A 30 year old IH isn't worth what it would cost to do that conversion, especially if you have to pay a shop to do it. You will not have to change the rear end ratio, but that change would make the truck faster, at the expense of some power. If the trans is bad, just swap in a trans with more gears, a 7 speed for instance. You won't need any more crossmembers, but might have to modify existing ones.
    Yes, an auto from another IH will bolt up, but as said before, there will be a lot of little things that will drive you nuts.
    If you really want an auto, it would be more cost effective to find an automatic truck and swap the dump box over.

    If you load that dump truck down with stone and drive down the road with a automatic, you only need one thing. The moment that engine wants a downshift and you are reaching for the stick that is no longer there; followed by, the auto downshifting... then you know right away that truck is tuned properly with both the transmission and engine talking to each other.

    What you do not want is transmissions that require satellite input to shift.
