1. CA does require having chains on board in snow zones during the winter season.
2. It only reauires 6 chains not 8. Modified Max has been accepted since winter of 2012. Single chain on each outside drive axle position and two drag chains on trailer (trailer drag can be staggered).
3. If cables are used they must be used in a maximum configuration, both tires of forward drive, outside of rear drive and again two drag chains on trailer.
4. Auto chains are acceptable, however, the drag chains on trailer are also always required.
5. US 50 is a length restricted route. Anything over 65 ft. is not allowed past Pollock Pines (Meyers from the Tahoe side) except doubles.
6. Tehachapi (58), Cajon (15),as well as Tejon (I-5) does not have any place to apply or remove chains they close the road to allow the extremely limited equipment to clear the roads.
CA has 3 levels of chaining;
1. Minimum, single chain outside tire of either drive axle and drag chains.
2. Modified Max, single chain on each outside drive tire both axles and drag chains.
3. Maximum chains, single chain on each forward drive tire, single chain on each outside rear drive, and drag chains.Last edited: Dec 25, 2018
SteveScott and SteerTire Thank this. -
Oh I see, you just copy/pasted the OOIDA info on CA chains....you weren't using your own experience or the actual law. OOIDA is rarely correct when dealing with CA requirements, they tend to exagerate what actually is happening out here. Be careful how much credit you give OOIDA, especially when it pertains to anything regarding CA.
I wish people would do research before posting info that comes from word of mouth or an outside source.SteveScott, SteerTire and Siinman Thank this. -

I'm not gonna pay your fine, but CHP has walked by me and second driver with 4 on our drives, no drags.
But you are correct about the fines. Oregon and WA are almost $600. Dunno about the communist state. -
