Yes you need them in your possession in case they require you to put them on.but you do know the type of weather out there at this point. Be wise & safe don't put yourself & others in harm's way.

You need 6 chains which is what CalTrans calls max. 4 of your drives 2 on trailer. CalTrans is saying 80m is still closed but local news is saying open. If open you will be max chained from NV, CA border to Colfax

Yeah, I-80 over Donner summit is the main artery between Reno/Sacramento. Cal trans has plenty of experience working the highway to keep open, but, they do close it when a lot of snow comes down. I believe calling 511 will give you current info. But trust me, if the road is "open" it will be a slow go and you will have to chain. Just one jacknife and you're sitting for awhile.

If a driver is using tire socks then boh drive axles and one trailer axle must be equipped with the devices. CA, in lighter snow conditions, has a version of chain law (I've heard it called "minimum chains" in which semi-trucks using steel link chains (conventional or old-style tire chains) may only be required to chain one of the drive axles. When using tire socks ANY chain requirement in CA is a "Max Chain" requirement, meaning both drive axles and one trailer axle must be "chained" with the tire socks.
