Does anyone use these apps to help keep track of their day for back up purposes or are they a waist of time?

use loose leaf logs and a composition book.no need to keep an electronic trail to that degree as there is enough w/fuel receipts and toll booths, etc.besides,if you are a company driver w/qualcom or whatever and elogs, every minute of your day spent in that truck is already kept up with and on permanent record.
SippingDiesel Thanks this. -
I use BigRoad app (free) keeps me straight on 30 min. break and 34 hr restart. I'm working on the safety dept. trying to let me e-mail them in, instead of copying into paper book. I think I've just about got them to see my point. The only charge is if the company "enrolls" the network to keep track of all the trucks and their whereabouts.

So basically the qualcom system maps out your day and tells you when your break is coming and counts down your drive hours and work day hrs. Is it idiot proof and do you still have to paper log just in case/
-
No. If you have an eLog unit (and you will) no need to be redundant and waste time with something else. The carrier doesn't want you doing this, and if the eLog unit takes a dump (they rarely do), it'll be the carrier's problem, not yours.

You need to have paper logs available if the QC breaks. But don't try to keep both an electronic and a paper copy, that would be 2 sets of logs. The paper is in 15 min intervals, and the electronic to the minute, so no way can they be identical. The QC counts down your hours, it's up to you when you take your breaks, etc.
There is an app called Recap + that I like. You can track your 70 and it calculates your recap hours. so you can plan your 34 resets if you need to.
maryteqntexas and SippingDiesel Thank this. -
You use the app as a tool to help predict your day and where you might be at? -
keep it simple. if your on elogs, keep some blank paper ones incase your elog goes down. recap + is nice if you want some help figuring out resets. wouldn't keep both phone app/paper logs side by side because some dot may not like you keeping two separate log books. plus it's extra work and heh, i can find other ways to spend my time on the road. like, umm. sleeping.
just my two cents.SippingDiesel Thanks this. -
If your e-log goes down it is your responsibility to have paper log sheets available to fall back on.
It comes back to the drivers responsibility - NOT the carrier's. -
Is it really so difficult that you need an app to help you?
It is very basic arithmetic.
