Husband has his Driving test scheduled with the Department of Motor Vehicles...in 3 weeks....he has been learning on a School bus.. (has no intentions of getting a job for this) just to get his CDL to keep his current Job on the Railroad.. (odd situation here)...
He has been told to just ramble and keep talking for this Pre-test inspection thing .. if you look this up on You tube some of these guys are talking for 45 minutes to an hour long.. is this what is expected to pass this portion of the Drivers Test ?? Any recommended videos to watch... tests on line dealing with this??
He really didn't get all that many hours driving behind the wheel.. the parallel parking part.. he hopes he can get that right... any advice on these (3) tests... -the other being Air Brakes (more talking)
We've also heard they just made things more difficult.. we live in PA.. I guess at the school bus place that is training him.. they keep telling him he's the "guinea pig" to see what is NEW so they will know for their future drivers in training them.. ..
CDL pre-trip inspection part of test... questions...

If your husband can ramble on about what he's checking, how he's doing it and why, he must know enough to walk the test. There's no trick or tough questions, if he knows what he's looking for he's going to pass. Rambling and waffling are two different things , the examiner will soon know if he's done his homework
An Observer and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
He's been playing these you tube vidoes for hours..is this enough ???
-
Is he getting a B?
I don't know what state you're in but last I knew, Ohio has a 30 minute time limit for the PTI. I imagine most have similar.
"Rambling for 45 minutes" is a good way to fail.
Hasn't his school given him a cheat sheet with everything on it? He should be doing the PTI from memory while another student checks him for accuracy, pointing out what he's missing. That's what worked for me anyway.stylez80Nine and Toomanybikes Thank this. -
Depends on how he learns. I'd have a hard time with 2+2 if all I had were YouTube videos.dunchues Thanks this.

Longarm asked: "Hasn't his school given him a cheat sheet with everything on it? He should be doing the PTI from memory while another student checks him for accuracy, pointing out what he's missing"..
No.. he's not going to an official school.. this is a School bus company that trains new drivers for School bus.. he has lots of paperwork...that yellow school bus book tells him all he's supposed to remember I guess.. there is no other student helping him here..
They told him he's done with training.. so the next step IS taking this Drivers test... with this Pre-trip inspection.. all he has is those You tube videos to go by... these guys are talking like 45 minutes to a full hour for some of these tests... (Why I am asking about this here ... he is worried he may screw this part of the test up)
Anyone take a CDL test (class B only ) in the state of Pennsylvania lately ? -
Will they allow him access to a bus? You could help him...
-
And a pre trip should never take 45 minutes.

The CDL test I took didn't even have a PTI part [~2013]. I was prepared for it anyway. Your state should have a CDL manual which outlines and describes exactly what will be expected in the Pre-Trip Inspection. There isn't any guess work. He should just study that section of your state's CDL manual.
What will most likely happen is after covering the proper order/sequence of the lights, signals, tires, leaf springs, brakes, etc., then opening the hood and covering the hoses, no leaks, brakes, belts, etc., at some point the examiner will just say "ok" and tell you to move on.
As long as you go through the proper order of PTI and begin listing all the parts and their appearance according to the manual, they will know you are prepared and tell you to move on.
Air brake test, parallel parking and road test is another story. He will have to successfully explain everything as mentioned in the manual and complete the entire parking maneuver and road trip.wife Thanks this. -
We had to do pre trip. And the state examiner we had knew his business. There were a few people in my class that really struggled with it, what they did was turn the pre trip into a rap. Then they all passed easy lmfao.
