A friend of mine just got his CDL permit and he wants to go on a road with me as a student. So he asked if I can be a CDL driving instructor for him.
Do I need a special license for that in Wisconsin?
I'm independent owner-operator with a bit more than 3 years experience and clean record.
I don't want to be a teacher in CDL school or examiner, just want to help a friend to get his CDL license.
Thanks.

From where I come from, a CDL permit holder just needs a licensed CDL holder in the jump seat while the permitee is driving. Just like a car.

Better check with your insurance company. If something happens and he is not insured to drive your truck, could mean problems for you. Yes, I know you can switch seats, but he may still need to be insured as an authorized passenger.
I have not heard any state requiring a special permit to train another driver. Also, I'm not sure you have to be in the jump seat. Just have to be in the truck.
I was training my boss on a run to Indy a few years ago. He got jacked up for going too fast and I was in the bunk getting something at the time. Cop didn't say anything about my location in the truck, just wanted to see my license along with his. He ended up not getting a ticket for going 75mph on the Circle. No idea how he talked his way out of that one and I was sitting there listening to him the whole time. Heh... -
It looks like I should have some kind of a authorization paper that I can write by myself as an owner of my company.
And the funny thing is that I'm not sure, who is going to teach who. That guy was driving dump trucks with a trailers and rebuild truck engines at time when I didn't know how many wheels semi has.
Basically, I just need to show him how to keep logs and watch him backing into the docks a few times.Last edited: Nov 14, 2011

So a CDL permit holder can drive with the CDL license holder sleeping ? I think not.
Wargames Thanks this. -
Please quote and link the regulation.
I didn't say it was a good idea. -
OK, go to wv.com (West Va's web site) as an example. CDL permit holder can only drive with CDL licensed driver in adjoining seat, Ohio says same thing. It's pretty much common knowledge. I mean, think about it, you only need to go to DMV, pass a minimal written test and then get a permit. (to drive 18 wheelers). And you think you can start driving basically alone while your "instructor" is tucked away in the sleeper ?

I know the laws...regulations in CA and NV...the permit driver must be accompanied by a licensed driver...and it is not directly stated, but inferred, that the licensed driver should be in the passenger front seat while the permit driver is at the controls.

Yeah, I know the laws too. As a former instructor here in Ca. The licensed driver MUST be in the jump seat when the permit holder is behind the wheel. There might be a few states that don't actually spell it out and it might be construed that the licensed driver only be present in the truck. Don't feel like looking up 47 more states.

Heck, I learned something here. Never knew they had to be in the Lazy boy across the cab. But it makes sense. Great responses from all of you. It takes time, to look up the REGS. I think the O.P. should buy coffee for everyone.
