My med card expired on February of this year. I couldn't renew it because the physician required me to get a sleep study done and without insurance I couldn't afford the cost and I already know I have sleep apnea and I definitely couldn't afford a CPAP without insurance.
So I figured I'll save up some money working a regular job until I can afford it. I wasn't too worried about it because I read online (like a #######) instead of just calling the dmv that I have 12 months after my med card has expired to get a new one on file before they cancel your CDL and make you retest.
Another ####### mistake I made is not realizing I could've just changed to "Excepted Interstate" and not needed a med card until I figured out my situation. The school I went to just told me what box to check "Non Excepted Interstate" when I first got my CDL.
Checked my license status and my CDL status says Cancelled.. I filled out the Self Certification Affidavit last night and changed to "Excepted Interstate" and submitted it online.
So am I screwed? Do I have to retest? I feel like an idiot.

Your CDL will be reinstated when you pass the DOT physical and take that to the DMV.

No driving a CMV though until you have a valid DOT card. -
Also, if your CDL, prior to being cancelled, had a HazMat endorsement that you let lapse that alone can cancel your CDL also. Anyone in TN and some other states with HazMat endorsement has one way to get rid of their HazMat, they have to go to a driver license office and exchange their current CDL (with HazMat) for a new CDL (without HazMat). In TN and some other states doing nothing and hoping your HazMat just evaporates with no harm will cause your CDL to be canceled. There is a long thread on this and JUST BECAUSE IT SEEMS STUPID it doesn't mean it can't be true. The law has very little to do what what makes sense or is reasonable. Sometimes it does and often it only seems that way by accident. In TN what I wrote is true and can be verified and other drivers had exactly this happen to them. Ask me how I know. If you never had HazMat on your TN CDL ignore this post. You just have the issue you started this thread with.
rollin coal, GULCH and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
So I called TDOSHS and spoke to multiple people to verify. Also sent an email so I can get it in writing.
I have 5 years from the time my med card expires to renew it before they make you retest.
They rejected my self certification affidavit for "Excepted Interstate" as that is only if you're driving for the government? Never knew that.
Hope this will help anyone who is in Tennessee dealing with a similar issue. -
