I had similar thing happen to me in TN. It can take TN 5 or more days to update after you submit info. Yes, you should have just changed your self-cert to 1 of the 2 boxes that does NOT require a current DOT exam AND ALSO UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE OPERATE A CMV IN AN OPERATION REQUIRING A CURRENT DOT EXAM CERTIFICATE (CARD). I think you are going to be OK once TN sees your most recent self-cert form. Call AND email the state and keep doing BOTH until you get at least an official email or physical letter via snailmail. You cannot just rely on a verbal OK on the phone. I relied on a verbal OK from the clerk on the phone and the state later canceled my CDL while I was on the road. Keep that snailmail letter with you if you ever move a CMV again until you have a current, valid DOT exam cert (card).

 

TN only requires DOT exam for non-excepted Interstate & non-excepted intrastate, IIRC. There are 2 other categories of CMV operation (Ag & excepted Intrastate, IIRC) not requiring a valid DOT card.

No driving a CMV though until you have a valid DOT card.

 

Also, if your CDL, prior to being cancelled, had a HazMat endorsement that you let lapse that alone can cancel your CDL also. Anyone in TN and some other states with HazMat endorsement has one way to get rid of their HazMat, they have to go to a driver license office and exchange their current CDL (with HazMat) for a new CDL (without HazMat). In TN and some other states doing nothing and hoping your HazMat just evaporates with no harm will cause your CDL to be canceled. There is a long thread on this and JUST BECAUSE IT SEEMS STUPID it doesn't mean it can't be true. The law has very little to do what what makes sense or is reasonable. Sometimes it does and often it only seems that way by accident. In TN what I wrote is true and can be verified and other drivers had exactly this happen to them. Ask me how I know. If you never had HazMat on your TN CDL ignore this post. You just have the issue you started this thread with.
