I had a Chauffeurs License and just the other day applied for my CDL A, the lady at the Secretary of State told me that CDL A is just a category and that i had the option of keeping my Chauffeurs License and adding on CDL A category or taking the chauffeurs off at which point it will just be a regular CDL A that is used by farmers and so on. She explained that Chauffeurs determines if your a driver for hire or not, and CDL A is just a category of the size of the truck you will operate.

I just wanted to know from people on here who have their CDL A, is your license as i was explained a "Chauffeurs with a CDL A category" or am i missing something here?

Here is my stab at it....

I'm guessing this is an older fellow, and qualifies for being grandfathered in with the Chauffeurs License Class A endorsement... this is how it used to be in my understanding... but it's different now. That's my best guess.

He can't be from Kansas. They done away with the Chauffeur's License ages ago. If you had one after they changed to the Class-A,B,C,D, and it came time to renew it, you had the option of dropping the Chauffeur and just going with a Class-C (car type) or getting the Class-A with no additional testing. Basically it was converted to a Class-A.

Yeah, that is only thing I can think of, as some states just renewed your old endorsements even when things began to change.... South Dakota comes to mind. I remember the old timers that mentored me talking about it.

I'm really fortunate to have learned this trade from 3,000,000+ milers. They have forgotten more than many drivers will ever know.

I'm guessing Illinois, they have a secretary of state that deals with motor vehicles. Although I thought chauffers license were long gone.
