Ok, I have my CDL and my med card expires in November of this year. I'm no longer driving. If I have no intention of driving again, can I let my med card expire with no consequences, or will it make my license not valid for driving personal vehicles? I'm in California
Thanks all for all I've learned along the way in this awesome place for drivers/students/wannabes...

Expired medical card in california only voids out the class A portion
of your licence. class c is still good

You'll be back.

(you are an addict now. Once that diesel gets in your veins, your done, buddy) -
you have an option or two...get a new health card, especially if you "ordinarily" get a physical yearly just for "general health reasons"....all states will require an up to date DOT card to maintain the CDL..as posted by someone else, calaifoony is one of them...
next option is to turn in your CDL for a regular driver's license....
BUT i caution you on this....
many times a CDL will regret turning in his/her CDL as maybe the driving bug hits again, OR some great little part time gig comes up and quick CASH can be made...
so if i were you, i'd keep the CDL, get either a yearly or 2 year physical and maintain that DOT med card...it ain't like a DOT physical is a big deal or expensive anyway's.....also be aware of any sleep apnea questionnaire you might be given at the physical.....answer wrong, and YOU might very well HAVE to take a sleep apnea test.....and that IS expensive.....then if this happens, it might be time to turn in the CDL. -
Yeah, when your Med card expires, your CDL reverts back to a class"c". In Az. after 1 year, your CDL becomes a class "c" permanently. Not sure about Ca. But, Dude, don't surrender your CDL. You may change your mind at some point and you will be glad you still have a CDL, without having to go thru the hoops again.

yeah here in Wisconsin you have to have a valid med card to renew your license as far as a cdl goes. Never surrender that license ......it could come in handy

My grandfather let his medical card expire right after his CDL renwal. So, he holds a license that says "CDL A" but he cannot drive commercially until he re-ups his physical. He does not drive anyway, but, in 5 years when his license is up for renewal again (assuming no tickets or accidents), he will have to get his medical current or surrender the CDL altogeher. He'll be 75 years of age then....He will probably just let it go. A very young 75 though, just never know.
His driving is mostly on the golf course anyway...dont think he is complaining.Last edited: Feb 15, 2011

Thank you all so much for the valuable info you've given me here. I'm good until November, so I have a few months to decide whats best for me and the family. At this point in time I don't see myself driving again unless it's local and I'm a little short on experience, but there could always be something that comes my way, you all are right on that.
Thanks againrocknroll nik Thanks this. -
I would keep it, you just never know. Unless it is seriously hindering you in some way....its only an asset that you earned.

And after next january 1st, (2012)they will (or should be) on file with your state DMV.
Then you won't have to carry it with you anymore.(supposedly)
Also, they should be coming out with that list of which medical officers/centers are qualified to perform said exam.
So shortly, the requirements will be the same in Every state.
