Hello. I was hoping somebody can help me out with this problem. New York DMV states that you must be 18 years old to obtain a CDL license, but it does NOT specify which class. Unless I am blind and cannot find it. Anyways, what I am trying to find out... Is it possible for an 18 year old to obtain a CDL A license with an Intrastate restriction?

Yes. You can get a cdl @ 18, but can't use it to drive out of state commercially until you're 21. You can get a local delivery job, haul aggregates, drive a wrecker, or anything else IN STATE...if they'll hire you.

Thank you, but is that limited to a CDL B? I want to drive a tractor trailer. My father owns a truck and he is willing to train me.

Nope. CDL A can be had @ 18. When I was running wreckers (before I had my cdl), one of the other kids had done the CDL class at the community college. He was 18, had his class A CDL, and was running the same light duty wreckers I was with my regular driver's license. They aren't going to move you into the big wreckers until you've got the basics down and show you've got a good head on your shoulders...even if you are licensed to drive them. As long as you're 18, the only restriction that is mandatory is intrastate only.

    TaterWagon#62 and UsualSuspect Thank this.

Are you from New York? Because NY is a nazi state. They might have different laws than another state.

Get your CDL-A and drive with your father. When you cross the state line, leaving NY, your father must drive. When you re-enter NY, you can drive again.

I don't want to say you're wrong but I think the freight for intrastate has to originate and deliver in the same state. Had a 19 years get his cdl with me and that's why no one would hire him

In this case it really doesn't matter for me. My father is a local driver. He hauls Syracuse to Buffalo and vice versa.

You can get one, but you cannot use it until 21 anyway. No one will take you. Maybe a farm will... under a tier two or other type of sworn tier affadavit added to your license that you are engaged in that specific work on a field never on public road.

18 is really, really young. I am not talking about ego or ability to drive. A monkey can drive a big truck by thumbing D on that automatic these days....

21 will be a good age to learn. Don't worry. That will come, and never stop learning.

Finally but not least... your tender years in youth will interfere with your freedom in the truckstops, some are pretty attentive to youngs who might not belong there.
