I personally drill a hole in the roof and put an NMO base there, then put a Larsen NMO-27 antenna on it.

If you feel at all nervous about drilling holes in your car, then take it to a place that sells business radios. They can do it in about half an hour for about $20 + mount ($15-$20).

The only thing I've run that works better is a 102" whip.

Depending on where you live or drive , fiber glass antennas dont last long when it comes to obstacles....ie...trees..limbs...garages...etc.

I had a Little Wil one time, never did like it. Couldn't receive or transmit good.

Who told you whip style antennas are useless?????

FWIW I run a 108 steel whip on the back of my S-10 and I can talk on 4 watts where others have to start reverting to running power. Yet when I hit a tree branch my whip just bends over and takes it.

4 miles is nothing for me...often I can talk easily 7-9 miles. Again on 4 watts of power. Height is might when it comes to antennas, as is having the "right" antenna for the job. In this case, the "right" antenna for CB for 1/4 wave is 9 ft. tall.

The Lil Wil is "ok". That's what I started out on. But the shorter the antenna, the more your range is hindered. A Lil Wil has a 36" whip. The 1000 has a 62" whip. You'll talk farther with the 1000. I actually did talk 7 miles on the 1k once on 4 watts, but with the Lil Wil maybe 3 miles.

I may have just been lucky, but my K30 magnet mount talks about 5 miles and hears about 11 most of the time. The whip was adjusted until I got a 1.1 to 1 SWR. Trimmed off about 4 inches to get the SWR really close. Works on both my Nissan Maxima and Chrysler mini van.

A Little Wil is what you use for a quick temporary install; I've got two of them. I ran a mag mount on my pick-up for a while. The paint under the magnet will eventually go bad, or become scratched up, plus the you have the coax flapping around if your not careful. My solution was to drill a hole in the middle of the roof and mount a Wilson 1000. No regrets and works great. FWIW, a whole in the middle of a pick-up roof that has the proper rubber plug inserted at trade in time, will not lower your trade in value............go for it!

MsJamie: You think the Larsen will out perform the Wilson mounted like I stated above? They are only rated for 200 watts, so that is a deal breaker for me in the pickup, but I'm curious as to how they would match up head to head. The Wilson is the longer antenna if I'm not mistaken........?
