just a quick question, i was talking to a driver and mentioned how it seemed he was closer than he was to me. He said he just turned his "box" on. is box lingo for an amp? if not what could he have meant? getting good distance now, and have read up on several ways to get greater distance. do yall suggest a linear amp, or one of the RFX 75s or something else?

Yes, a box, is a slang for an amp. Also called a pill box, or a foot warmer. I call it a stove, dunno if anyone else does.

The best way to get talk distance is to run a good antenna, good coax and make sure the SWR is low.

Do all of this before an amp.

An amp is a supplement to, but not a replacement for, the right antenna and coax.

As for an amp vs the RFX75....clearly the amp is the winner here.

The RFX75 is for when your boss won't let you run the extra wires needed for an amp in the truck, and you want to have just a little more power than what the average Cobra 29 will offer.

    Ok .....

1st .... There is no such thing as a CB linear ONLY lnears being used illegaly on CB. AS for the RFX-75 I'm not a fan of butchering up radios ... SO I would get one of the ILLEGAL FOR USE ON CLASS D CB boxes ....... and have fun ........

BTW there are linears like these that are sold and are legal and will not work on CB so make shure you get a CB one ......

I never understood the desire for some people to risk a $10,000 fine for running illegal power on CB.

You don't need it for "shooting skip"; I've worked a dozen countries in Europe on 5 watts SSB on 28 MHz (10 meter ham band). If the band's not open, you can run a megawatt and still not break 100 miles.

Okay, so more power can get you a little farther on groundwave. Say a stock CD can get 5 miles on a given installation. Tweak and peak it cleanly (!) to 10 watts, and you can expect to get 8 miles or so. Stick a brick on it for 50 watts, and you can expect to go 16 miles. Pull out the credit card and get that 500 watt space heater. Congratulations, you can now get 55 miles, and every time you key up, your laptop reboots, your phone disconnects, and your engine computer suddenly sees a half a dozen transient sensor failures.

That is, unless there's a hill in the way. All your amp does then is gets your signal from S9 to S9+20.

I guess that some guys simply have to have *something* they can claim is bigger than someone else's...

Well put. I think the problem lies in the fact most truckers don't run the best antennas and use the amp to compensate. Then when everyone else runs an amp, unless they aren't trying to also key up on top of you, then you are forced to play the "can't beat them, join them" game, and purchase an amp equivelant to, if not bigger than what they have.

Gotcha thanks all for the input and knowledge. I have the swr and such as it should be, and on a good day can get up to 6 miles of distance. My coworker and i are roughly 10 to 15 miles apart at any given point. We are looking for ways to get that kind of distance with the radios we already own.

The problem is that there will always be someone with an amp more powerful than yours.

Back in the '70s-'90s, there was a guy in the Pittsburgh (PA) area who went by the handle "Pipeline". Somehow, he managed to get the strangest stuff. One time, he got his hands on a 4CX15000A transmitting tube that was removed from service from a local TV station. So, of course, he built a CB linear out of it, "just to see if he could". He put about 12,000 watts into a dipole antenna with it.

    He used it one time.

12,000 watts is QRP for some CB'ers.
