Well I purchased my first CB with advice from this forum. It works, but honestly I’m a bit intimidated on using it.
What I know about CB usage I learned from watching Smokey and the Bandit and from listening to the song Convoy when I was a kid.
Do drivers still say “breaker-breaker 19”?
How do I ask a question?
Is there a common dictionary that I can look at that will give me basic slang terms?
I’m probably overthinking this...any help would be appreciated.
FYI if the I-5 this morning wasn’t so quiet I would just listen and learn. Currently NOAA is predicting 35-45mph winds in SW Oregon and going into Weed, Ca. I’d like to know more about conditions.
Thanks

Dude its not a HAM radio. Just key the mic and talk. I like to sound professional but that's the pilot and HAM operator in me. Nobody cares.

Asking for a break isn't used much. Usually when you hear a conversation on a channel other than 19 or 17 in CA. You could ask for a break. "Break" or "break channel" and they would pause and let you join the conversation. But on 19 just go ahead and put the question/comment out.
Just bieng informal and straight to the point works best IMO. Because there maybe people traveling in the opposite direction and your contact time is usually limited. You can use the time trying to be formal and have Less time for the question/point.
There are a few threads on TTR about CB slang. I think the ones about city nicknames are good to know about.

A long time ago I decided to not engage in the CB slang syndrome. Using the lingo seems so artificial and pretentious to me. I don't talk that way off the air, and I'm sure not going to start just because I'm broadcasting on 11 meters. I bet some drivers won't talk to me because I sound like an outsider, but that's OK with me. Using plain English will get you understood by all English speakers, but you run the risk of offending the diminishing herd of those who feel superior by talking in code.
