What are you guys hearing about Caterpillar and the fact they don't make engines for commercial trucks anymore? And I am hearing they are trying there damnedest to get out of all warranty work?
I guess the shops are not wanting to work on them, because they can't get CAT to pay for the work when turned in?
Anybody have insight on this, because I am looking to buy a truck, and if it has a CAT and a warranty, it still might not be worth the hassle....

I love the way a CAT looks, sounds, and pulls and if someone else is buying the fuel it would be the way to go.However the ISX Cummins and Detroit have been smoking them on performance issues for several years.Reason being they went out of the truck side of the business.
-
i have not heard of anybody having warranty issues....... some dealers like to double dip by telling you its not covered and you pay up ...... then the dealer sends in the paperwork and gets reimbursed from cat

yup.. gone from the US OTR trucks.. They still do off-road engines.

The main reason for Caterpillar getting out of truck engines is referred to as vertical migration. Each of the OEM truck manufactures has aligned themselves with an engine manufacture and has effectively reduced the amount of Caterpillar engines installed. This has been done by charging a premium for the Cat engine or by offering incentives for the other engines. This way the truck manufacture can be more profitable
Cat is not stepping away from warranty. They have, however, rolled the truck warranty responsibility under the Global Caterpillar warranty. This group is requiring the repair shop to explain what was done to diagnosis and repair the issue. This is making the shops become accountable for the proper repair instead of throwing parts at the engine. Caterpillar is honoring the active warranties and wants to insure that the engine owner gets the value of the engine that they purchased. Also, Cat is currently offering multiple repair and extended coverage programs for these legacy engines to help support not only the original owners but also the second, third and fourth owners.
Finally, why would Caterpillar give themselves a bad name when they are trying to break into the vocational truck market? -
Why would anyone want to have one when they are getting out of the truck business and it is impossible to get decent fuel mileage with one?

First off, Cat and any other engine maker does thier damndest to get out of warranty work. I've only ever dealt with Cat and their warranty and to be honest? It sucks! It isn't worth the paper its written on. But I wouldn't trade my wore out, fuel sucking, fully mechanical (6.5-7mpg's hauling more on the wagon than your grossing) Cat then any newer cummins or detroit!Big Duker Thanks this. -
we have not had any problem getting paid on warranty repairs from cat. they are asking us to do take a few more steps when we do a warranty repair. but if we sumbit the waranty repair and its correct they pay us with no problem. we do not double dip. you could lose your cat dealership status if you did. its wrong to do and not worth it. the only time i would ever charge a customer for a warranty repair would be if its borderline if warranty will pay for it. but even then i get a credit card number and do not run it till warranty declines it and i call the customer
