Personally a engine is a engine to me. I prefer Detroits as they are a more popular engine with the mega carriers. But it is completely up to you for choice. Cats like their construction equipment are good for low end torque. Cummins are just another engine. Granted I do have one in my pickup. Yet if I were buying a truck I would stick to Detroit. But that is just me.

I love my Cat, but those detroits are pretty good on fuel.

I have owned Detroit and CAT. I prefer CAT. It seems that there are fewer maintenance issues with CAT than Detroit or Cummins, but parts tend to be higher. So you may work more on Detroit or Cummins, but parts will likely cost less. CAT's seem to have more torque. I could live with any of them. You can rebuild a Cummins for about $10,000 or so. A CAT may run $12,000-18,000. It is more of a personal preference. All of them will make money for you.

caterpillar, cummins, detroit etc.should be good engines.I think its the maintenance that we give those engines that determines the life of that engine.

All of them are great engines, it depends on the driver!

Cummins are easy to maintain, you can't get a CAT unless it's an older truck. CAT's are a money eater when it goes in the shop, but it can take decent abuse.

Detroits are good the first 500,000. Then they starts nickle and diming you. The company im with has 25 of them (they are all 05 and newer) Ive never had a cummins but heard good things on the n14. I say get a early C15 or 3406E. Theres my two cents hahah

Early C15's were reliable, logged 1 million miles on mine before it needed some parts.
