I realize that everyone will get a different MPG but in general what do you think I should be getting in this situation:

13Speed Cat 3406B pulling a 48' van drop with no more than 5K LBS loaded. I know terrain will effect MPG and all that other stuff bu just curious if it will 6MPG or closer to MPG.

Alos have a question on retread of tires. I got a steer tire and wanted to use the tire as a retread for the drives. I was told that if the tire was older than 5 years that they would not retread. Is this true?

A lot of this depends on the model of truck you are running, but 6 should be pretty close to what ya can get especially with only 5000 in the box.

I have heard of this two, but can't confirm it since I will only run virgin rubber. I heard they do this because of the natural ageing of the casing and sometimes the cords will break with no warning after years of service. I do know of a place that will only cap a casing 3 times (or 2 depending on the brand of casing).

So only 6 MPG? I guess I was hoping it would be closer to 9.

I'm not to fimiliar with the International trucks and whether they got roof fairings. If you got a roof fairings then you will have a good shot at 7, maybe 8. If this is a company trailer that you will be doing a drop/hook with others then I would guess 6-7. Now if this is your own trailer you might get better if it is well maintaned. You know tire pressures, alignment, and decent tires. The biggest killer of my MPG right now is the lack of maintaince on some of Schneiders trailer.

The 3406b was not designed for fuel mileage...

    Its a workhorse...

On the other hand when you load the wagon it doesn't make a lot of difference...

You can make the most difference with your right foot...

I've pulled flatbeds, dumps, vans, logs, with them for years... 5.5 to 6 average ...

You can do better on fuel mileage while hauling light loads with a smaller engine in some situations ...

If you trade down though expect hp withdrawal symptoms

If you buy a big horse... your gonna have to feed it...

pulling trucker....you drive one of those pumpkins?
    What route?
For me, all of this my private stuff. Truck does not have any roof flarings. Trailer is well maintained.
Have yet to run a full tank through to know for sure but I believe I am getting around 6.6.

I'm leased to Schneider pulling their wagons around the northeast mostly, but I do venture out to Texas once and a while. This winter I might even head to Cali for a couple of weeks and play around.

Good luck on the the fuel mileage. Just watch where ya fuel casue this will make a difference more than what people think. Especially with fuel prices starting to climb again you will see more and more junk fuel on the market.

I run a c-15 cat set at 550hp, on an 18 speed. It is a car-haul outfit, the trucks lifetime 1,000,000 average is 4.41mpg. But the truck idles all the time to load and sleep, and we run 75+mph.

You have a classic style truck, you need to run the truck no faster than 65mph, you should get free flow exhaust, and spend money on long lasting LOW ROLLING resistance tires, not crappy retreads that will eat your money.

My top 5 things that will help you get good mileage.

    1. Slow down 65 max

    2. Tires with low rolling resistance, super singles if possible.

    3. Free flow mufflers.

    4. Anticipate stops.

    5. Synthetic oil.

If I was in your operation, I would add

    6. Dead axle, meaning eliminate power divider and install tag axle.
