I bought my truck and I went to change a hose and found that there is water coming out instead of coolant... My question is do I need to run a cat specific coolant or any from walmart or something like that works ? Thanks

Cat offers coolant. Ec-1 and it is an extended life coolant. Any coolant that conforms to Cat ec-1 will work. Best to buy premix to ensure your using distilled water for your 50/50 mix.

You can run the green coolant as long as it is a low silicate formula, but you will need supplemental sca's. Cat's recommendation on sca's is the borate-nitrite combination. Baldwin product is BTE, Pencool has a product available as well as many others. The main thing is keep your glycol and sca in spec. Test strips are available from many sources, Baldwin, Pencool etc. As stated above, either use the 50/50 premix or if you use the green full strength formula, dilute it with distilled water. Whichever you use, elc or standard, you need to completely clean out system to install one or the other, if you're unsure of what's in there. The 50/50 elc should be marked with a red top on jug, indicating it is for diesel engine formulation. Most elc's will last app. 300,000 miles if the 50/50 formulation is used to begin with and not diluted. Then you can get an elc extender additive that will prolong it's use to 5 or 6 hundred thousand miles. Whichever you use, it needs to be checked and speced at every service interval.

The Final Charge extended life product that is priced pretty good at most truck stops is Cat EC-1 compliant. I have been rather fond of the ELC coolants for a while. No need to check SCA level, good for an extended length of time (300,000 to 500,000 miles) and even longer when an extender additive is added at the 300,000 mile mark. Just about the best product for preventing liner cavitation also. I will never go back to SCA coolants.

Trp (paccar) has their extended life coolent and it's a lot cheaper than cats...... Probably made by the same manufacturer .......

You are probably correct. There are not many producers of ELC coolants, and what they do produce goes into a lot of different labeled jugs and drums. The only difference I have seen is that ELC does come in two different varieties. A regular and no nitrite version. Detroit specs call for the no nitrite version. Not sure about the other engine OEM's.
