The CAT C15 seems to be the favorite CAT engine out there but how do the C12/C13 motors do reliability wise? Some good trucks at good prices with these motors in them. (maybe thats the reason?) Thanks, be safe.

c/13 perty good motor i used to run one in a dump truck so it had alot of a workout on it that a road truck wont have i had no problems out of it though.
a c/13 i believe is a 2100rpm engine too. I wouldnt be scared of one it just wont pull as good as the c/15 but with light loads and flat terrain the fuel mileage will payoff big dividends. I learned that from Kevin Rutherford lol.
The c/12 is to small of a engine for me dont know a thing about themLast edited: Sep 17, 2009

I run a C12 in my truck pulling a hopper and I dont load light it is still a 430 horse motor it is rather impressive powerwise and while probably not the best mountain engine it will work fine for many applications and weighs about 900lbs less than a big block and is only a half liter smaller than a c13 which is an acert
fuel mileage wise it averages 6.85-7.2 depending on the situation in a pete 379 I've commented on this before in other posts looks through my past posts and read moreblacklabel Thanks this. -
I've seen a nice 387 and a nice T600 with a 430hp in them and it may be a way to save some money on fuel sinse I generally don't load heavy. thanks guys

66k gvw 2 drops, 8LL transmission with a C12 motor, and 4.62 rears. Full locking rears, 3 st as he j as ke brake. Its loaded

I have 445hp c12 in my 379 and also have a tune in it. 18 speed. She pulls with the best on a steep grade. I never have engine problems knock on wood. I keep up on overhead and always re seal any leaks if one pops up. Am I gonna say it’s a better motor than c15? I’m not sure but if I have the extra cash when this motor goes south, I’m gonna do swap just becuase I like big motors
Pretty clean for a motor that was rebuilt 10 years ago.

Chubby Fly: Nice looking C12
As for the C12 and C13, we’ve gotten our first 350hp C13 ACERT last year and I finished the installation of the hook lift this year over the winter.
Been a good truck, engine feels good and smooth. I haven’t got a chance to drive it much to verify fuel economy.
Another company 10 mins away that runs tri axle dump trucks have all C12’s.
Good engines, they like them. I drove their trucks a few times and found the 425hp C12 to be decent. Not as powerful as our 1990 international with the 425hp 3406B.Chubby Fly Thanks this. -
A little clip. About 73k pounds From a stand still partially up a grade. No gear splitting
Shawn2130 Thanks this. -
Chubby Fly: looks like it moves good to me. Better than the Mack and Mercedes we have weighing 80,000 lbs each.
The 3406E I’m driving with dump trailer loaded at 120,000 lbs goes the same as the other two dump trucks. -
Shawn2130 Thanks this.
