Can the cat gurus help me out and explain to me how I can tell if the water pump is getting weak or going out. The problem I'm having is water temp runs hot when rolling up n down small hills but flat land and down hill it runs cool n normal. I also noticed my oil temp is running up on 190-200 also when it never got that high unless on a big hill. Now I got a new Detroit radiator, cac, and ac condenser. I also just changed the thermostats running 190's instead of the 180's I had. Peterbilt told me the pump is fine and psi was 20-23 with a 16lbs cap on but I don't believe them. I still think its the water pump going. I have no leaks or coolant loss.... thanks

Not a Cat Guru, but have experienced some water pump failures where the impeller will spin on the shaft. But when this happens you will not be able to pull a load and even have to be careful bobtailing not to overheat it. You did up your operating temperature by 10 degrees when you changed those thermostats. I'm also wondering how many rows you have on your new radiator? And what about that fan clutch, is it slipping?

the 190's probably are some of it what kinda water temp? I did what was suggested by a smart individual installed a 180 t-stat and a 190 t-stat. maintains a more uniform temp. it works really well. also switched pumps and put on a high flow a-cert pump. if you go that route you have to change the outer t-stat housing and flow plate that bolts to the back of pump and neck that goes to oil cooler. what a/c condenser did you buy? oem or from Detroit rad? there were some problems of Detroit's a/c condenser restricting the air flow to much.

Nut that holds impeller tight on pump shaft may be loose pull off back cover and plate check for a loose impeller i ran into this with my last truck took off nut cleaned and red loctite fixed it up .

I bought the heavy duty dura one not oem. It might be the 190 stats I'm not used to it running 200 deg in the hills. My fan kicks on at 205 so its on - off all the time. And on big hills I gotta let outta the fuel to keep it from throwing the lights n code for high water temp. It might be the fan hub going out. Its driving me crazy lol like I said on flat the oil n water stay 180 I didn't know if the PDI power makes it run a little warmer. Also hey superhauler, PDI stage one turbo what should be the psi be? One time mines 36 then its 40

that seems a little low on boost compared to what mine did 47 to 52. but it is probably the difference in programing setup's . 200 deg. is ok, but fan shouldn't be kicking on so soon. may have high intake temps causing the fan to kick on so soon. you said you got a new a/c condenser also, was it from Detroit rad? that's what I was talking about maybe restricting the air flow. there was some talk about that a while ago. do you have a way of monitoring your intake temp. try to drive it while keeping boost down. it sounds like you may have a boost leak some where causing the fluctuation in boost maybe going on.

Yeah all 3 were from Detroit radiator. And my PDI set up is all stage one with the manifold, and no I don't know or have a air intake temp. Truck runs fine n pulls awesome just warm that's all. Fuel mileage is up around 5.8-6 @ 70-75mph.. oh and my egt's don't run over 800º

Fan shouldn't kick on til 217, correct? Then back off at 205 on it's way down. Are you sure you don't have any boost leaks?

if all three are from Detroit, are you sure the cac is a duralite or their powermax cac? the reason is I did the same thing and their cac cracked down the hot side (well known of doing that) the a/c condenser's have caused some air flow problems for some folks. with the way your boost is all over the place i'll bet a sixpack you have a leak. which will also cause high intake temp making the fan kick on early.
