We have a 1994 Peterbilt that came with a Cat 5EK or what some people like to call it a 3406E. We took it to Caterpillar and had them to flash the ecm to 550HP and 1850 Torque. Which was successful. Before we flashed the ecm we was running the turbo with the blue line plugged off, reason was because the ecm had 430HP at 1500 torque, so that helped us until we took it to Cat. Now Caterpillar didn’t say anything to us about the blue line being off, however now I’m building up to 35-37 psi on boost .

Do I need to plug it back up? I don’t want to hurt anything . Maybe caterpillar didn’t see it I’m not sure . Before my flash I was getting around 25-27 psi, so big difference in fuel. Thanks in advance guys !

I am assuming by blue line you mean the waste gate line, around 35lbs of boost is pretty normal on a 550 tune. The problem is your turbo is not meant to spool that much, so either you plug the line back in or replace your turbo, or leave as is and blow the turbo, possibly creating a bigger problem. My mbn had a waste gated turbo that I plugged the waste gate on when I went to a 550 tune, that turbo lasted about 2 months over spinning it to 36 lbs of boost

Thank you it’s mixed on either leaving it off or plugged in. Fuel mileage seems to be better using the waste gate .

With that turbo, if you leave the blue line off, you will be replacing it within two months like the man said. It will blow your shaft right in half.

    rslivelyjr Thanks this.

If you're EGT's are rockin with a factory tune, you've got some other issues. CAC leaks, intake gaskets, exhaust leaks before the turbo.

Lots of these older trucks are out there still running factory radiators and CAC. That would be the first place I'd look if EGT's are an issue.

What should the egt’s be running at normally, what would be considered “high”

Normal egt's for a single turbo cat are in the 550-750 range mid 700's should only be happening on hard pulls.

Mine will climb up to around 900 on a pull if I’m loaded 48k ish on flatbed I normally downshift to 9th and it drops pretty quick to 600 ish this is in South Carolina/ North Carolina area. It’s just a single turbo believe it’s only 475 hp 5ek
